Murder of the UnitedHealthcare CEO

Wow. $2000/week plus room and board. Requires subject matter expertise and lots of leadership experience. I bet that’s a tough job to get.

He was a member of Phi Kappa Psi based on this publicly available photo on the assassin’s Instagram account.

Yes, by all appearances this dude is smart and has his s–t together. All the more intriguing where all that changed. Was there a specific trigger? Or had it been brewing? What finally pushed him over the edge?

Lots of people are bad with faces.

I, for one, can’t reliably recognize family members from even close-up portrait photos. I’m unusual in it being that strong, but varying degrees of prosopagnosia are pretty common in the general population, and connecting 2D and 3D faces—and especially doing so at the level of surety you’d want for identifying someone as a possible criminal—is at least difficult for most of us with it.

No! Definitely not :grimacing:
I just meant that the story is intersecting with many areas of interest here on cc, including Ivy League matriculation and prestigious pre-college summer programs.

Yes, he was in a frat. Surely family and friends realized that it was him.

At first, I figured that the shooter might have been mentally ill, schizophrenic. But this young man was incredibly high-functioning, right through grad school. I haven’t been able to find anything about recent employment, however, so still can’t rule out a more recent onset.

This Instagram account appears to be associated with the suspect. The user name references “fiji”, which is sometimes used to refer to the ΦΓΔ fraternity. But one of the photos visible shows a group of students holding a sign from the ΦKΨ fraternity.

I’m in a lot of Facebook groups. Many are progressive/leftist political groups and it was no surprise at all that there was a lot of shooter fandom in those groups. I’m also in several cancer-related groups. No surprise that this event triggered a lot of complaints about the health insurance industry. But what I wasn’t expecting was that even my Golden Girls fan groups are jumping on the “hot Italian” train, too.

Comments from college friends trickling in - all so far saying an extremely normal guy in college.

There are tens of thousands of fine young men and women who study at Ivy League schools and/or attend prestigious summer programs, and the overwhelming majority of them are not criminals. I’m sorry, I don’t see the connection and to me it seems insensitive to parents and students on these forums to suggest there is any link between these schools/programs and the alleged actions of this suspect.

Wow. The poster said nothing of the sort. This murder has obviously touched a nerve among a certain set, but it seems rash to take it out on this poster.

The link I was trying to make was between the details of the crime and those of on this thread that happen to be interested in discussing this crime. Did not mean to suggest that there’s anyone here with any connection to the suspect.

Personally, as someone with college age kids, this development makes the case even more shocking and interesting. If the suspect had turned out to be a 65 year old, my interest would not have been quite so piqued. That’s just me though, ymmv.

Here’s a detail that I haven’t seen before:

NYT: Mr. Mangione’s family has prospered from its real estate holdings and a chain of senior rehabilitation centers.

Well, it’s clear from this latest news that the suspect (Mangione) is smart enough to get into and graduate from an Ivy League college, but dumb enough to get caught murdering somebody in broad daylight.

Hope he enjoys living in prison because that’s where he’ll be headed before too long.

This whole situations is beyond sad on many levels.

Two families are now broken forever…the victim and the person who killed him.

My prayers are with both of these families as they navigate this horribly difficult time.

Phi Kappa Psi is listed on his LinkedIn profile. I’m one of the people who said he could easily have been a CC member, and I don’t think that disparages CC to say, or implies anything except exactly what it says. This is someone who likely has more in common with the people on this forum than did Brian Thompson. I do think that’s interesting, and relevant, to the discussion.

? Thompson has teenage kids. Why would you think he wouldn’t be as interested in his kids college trajectory as any other parent here?
