Which top colleges in the West offer the best experience for non-music majors who want to participate in ensembles?

By ‘top’ I mean a place where the middle 50% for SAT begins above, say, 1800. I want good, but not necessarily elite. I know this is a rather artificial way to define top.

Instrument is cello.

Size is open question. D says doesn’t want college smaller than HS (1700), but seems willing to consider Whitman.

Location also an open question, just not middle of nowhere with nothing off campus. Again, Whitman might represent one end of acceptability-- Walla Walla is a little small and remote, but it is supposed to be a nice town.

Factors that come to mind for “best experience” in the music program are quality and opportunity. The possibility of some financial aid wouldn’t hurt.

Thanks.
