Music industry lost another one RIP Glenn Frey

So sad. Every Eagles song reminds me of some part of my life. My two favorites are Love Will Keep Us Alive and I Can’t Tell You Why. So much talent in one group.

The History of the Eagles documentary is fascinating. So much I didn’t know about them (and I thought I knew everything about them!)

He was not that old. Such a loss.

This is a real tragedy.
I’m going to watch the History of the Eagles Doc again tomorrow nite- I know I’ll be crying all the way through it-hearing all of those haunting lyrics once again…
such a loss…

Someone posted a Youtube video on Facebook of them doing Desperado in 1983 on Letterman. One of my favorites. Gets to me every time.

The Eagles are one of my all time favorites. Saw them in 1994 on the “Hell Freezes Over Tour” and 2 years ago on the “History of the Eagles Tour.” Both were great shows and there were people of all ages attending. Went to college in the late 70’s, when the Hotel California album was released. I used to play the Eagles CD’s in my car all the time when my kids were growing up. One day my daughter said to me…" Mom, I blame you for knowing all the words to Hotel California!" RIP Glenn…your talent transcended multiple generations!

I wasn’t a big fan, I liked many of their songs, but never really “got into them” so to speak. However, I did get a chance to see them in concert more than a few years ago, and they were about as solid a group to see in concert as you could wish. Some idiots, especially the critics, criticized the Eagles for being too slick, too produced, I heard complaints that their live shows were ‘just like the CD’s’, but I think they simply were, well, doing something unmentionable on here, there was a lot of depth to their songs, and I am sorry, but there is nothing authentic particularly in being rough or raw, they simply were fantastic musicians. I remember during the concert, just before doing “Take it to the Limit”, Frey joking that was the story of his wife and daughter (I don’t know if he had a daughter:) with credit cards. They definitely left something behind as a group and Frey as a songwriter, and no one can take that away.

Hotel California was released when I was in 8th grade, Many of my classmates and those in my small town are friends on FB with our then music teacher. Instead of forcing us to learn about things we had zero interest in with regard to music , he was really in touch with his students and the music we were listening to.
He really gets a kick out of still being able to " teach " via FB posts and engage in discussions about music .
This album sticks out to me rom that time period as well as Stevie Wonder’s ’ Songs in the Key of Life " and also Fleetwood Mac " Rumors "

So at the Springsteen show in Chicago tonight, he played Take It Easy on the guitar, with no other instrumentation or vocal backup. By the end of the song, half of the audience members had turned the flashlights on their smart phones and were waving them as we all were singing along. Very moving.

My H and I have a new little thing we do where we Wikipedia a band, read about them, perhaps Wikipedia the articles on their major songs (I love knowing the backstory) and then we YouTube (preferably live) videos and have a mini concert lying in bed on the iPad, going chronologically. We did so for the Eagles last night and only got up to Life in the Fast Lane before we went to sleep! Tonight we will finish, and then go through Don Henley, Glenn Frey and Joe Walsh solo careers.

It’s pretty cool when a band has 3 talents who can handle lead vocals (well, the Eagles also had Randy Meisner on TITTL). Who else has 3 strong, distinctive lead vocalists? only ones I can think of are the Beatles, Beach Boys, Chicago and Three Dog Night.

@pizzagirl:
THe moody blues did as well, Ray Thomas, Justin Hayward and John Lodge all were lead vocalists on various songs (Ray Thomas was the incredible voice on “Legend of a Mind”)

@musicprnt You left out Mike Pinder from the early days. Wonderful deep voice. Altogether, the band had quite the range.

Tune in to CNN tonight between 8 PM EST and 12 AM EST.

No, it’s not another Republican debate for the top twelve in the polls. It’s called “The History of the Eagles” and includes rare concert footage etc. Part one is on from 8 to 10:30 PM. and Part two follows immediately.

I enjoyed the documentary; thanks for the recommendation. I’m not sure what to think of the part where Glenn Frey demanded that he and Don Henley get paid more. Was that a jerk move or standard practice where certain band members get paid more based on their contribution to the group? On one hand, it would have been gracious of him to say equal pay for all; on the other hand, I think it’s fair for those who contribute more to get compensated more. My only comparison is from the documentary “Don’t Stop Believing” about Journey, which I highly recommend. The original band members didn’t need to do it, but they gave all members equal compensation. This was especially fantastic since the newly discovered lead singer probably didn’t expect it.

Interested to hear opinions from those who follow the music industry.

H and I are watching it on Netflix.

This documentary is excellent. Makes me grateful that they have all survived the indiscretions of their youth. Some of the footage they showed of a concert in Houston in 1978… I was there!

I tried watching it, but there was snow coverage instead. Anyone know if it’s scheduled again?

We are watching it on Netflix, not regular TV. Do you have Netflix?

Showtime repeats “The History of the Eagles” almost every day.

@Pizzagirl, we do have Netflix. It will require a lesson on play station controls to use it, but that’s what I have kids for. Thanks.

Do you have an iPad? We watch Netflix on our iPads. It’s just open, sign in, and go - super easy! It’s almost too easy! It also lets you start up where you stopped (we aren’t all the way through it yet).
