Thanks for all of the suggestions–I now have a lot of new pandora stations! Reading some of the suggestions makes me realize how out of touch I am with recent music. I recognize maybe half of the names of recent musicians–I have heard of Coldplay, taylor Swift and Lady Gaga–but I have a lot of catching up to do. I do think that some of the singer/songwriters might work–who could not like Simon and Garfunkel?

My sons are always adding music they think I’ll like to my iPod.

Here are some of my favorite artist/song additions:

Adele - One and Only;Someone Like You

Bruno Mars - Count on Me;Talking to the Moon; The Lazy Song; Grenade; Just the Way You Are

Christina Perri - Arms

Evanescence - My Immortal; Imaginary; Good Enough

Jason Mraz - I’m Yours

Matchbox 20 - 3 A.M.; Push; Back to Good

Mumford and Sons - Lots of their songs are great. Too many to list. Just be careful blasting Little Lion Man too loud!

Train - Hey, Soul Sister; Parachute, This Ain’t Goodbye, Words

The Script - Breakeven

Enjoy your road trip!

Although they do appreciate music as a whole and have a wide range of taste, as children of parents from the Headbanger’s Ball generation, my kids are really into heavy metal. S1 & S2 are especially into Iron Maiden, Dio, Motorhead, and AC DC, plus Rob Zombie, Avenged Sevenfold, Sevendust and such for newer (although not new-new) bands. However, they also have a healthy appreciation for Weird Al Yankovic, Richard Cheese, and other fun music.

In the car we tend to take turns choosing music, with all four of us enjoying the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Gorillaz, and way too many more to mention here!

What broadened my daughter’s musical tastes was 10 years of competitive dance. She did tap, ballet, jazz, and lyrical/contemporary. As a result of her own dances and spending many weekends sitting in auditoriums at competitions watching others dance, she has an appreciation for broadway tunes, classic popular jazz (she did solos to Natalie Cole and Liza Minelli, among others), unique artists like Regina Spektor, and classical/ballet music, as well as what her friends are listening to: hip hop, dance/club music, and country. Add in her father’s love of classic rock, and she has a really eclectic iPod. (I don’t know anyone else with songs from Cirque du Soleil on their iPod!)

I get a lot of musical suggestions from her, because as morismm said above:
And last year, S introduced us to Vampire Weekend.

Buddha Bar and Cafe Del Mar…

I love it when my kids love some goofy song from my youth. My 11-year-old daughter heard me playing “The Look of Love” by the new-wave band ABC and now has the lyrics memorized and sings it all the time and asks me to play it in the car. It makes me feel slightly less elderly.

Lafalum, so true! Because of dance, my D has an appreciation of everything from Vivaldi to Big Band to Motown.

Laf - So cool about your D’s dancing music.

My son got exposed to a lot of music in band and jazz band (“Take 5” is a favorite in this house). In ms his buddy’s loved the medley of Queen tunes they played… but I think it seemed less cool once they learned their parents had liked Queen.

Here’s a new one that my daughter and I both like. Alison Mosshart of The Kills and The Dead Weather doing a cover of Louis Armstrong’s What A Wonderful World for a TV show soundtrack. Awesome.

[What a Wonderful World](<a href=“Alison Mosshart & The Forest Rangers - What A Wonderful World. - YouTube”>Alison Mosshart & The Forest Rangers - What A Wonderful World. - YouTube)

This is a very jarring change of pace from her work with Jack White in:

[The Dead Weather](<a href=“The Dead Weather - Will There Be Enough Water? (Live from The Roxy) - YouTube”>The Dead Weather - Will There Be Enough Water? (Live from The Roxy) - YouTube)

My daughter and I like a lot of the same music. She is into a lot of my old new wave/punk and we both adore Amanda Palmer who used to be in the Dresden Dolls. She is considered punk Caberet and is a very underated artist. We also like listening to the soundtracks of Rocky Horror Picture show and Little Shop of Horrors. Lady Gaga is cool, too.

My kid and I will listen to Sirius/XM - Soultown (Classic Soul and Motown), Backspin (Old school Hip-hop). Satellite radio is rather nice for the long road trips.

She introduced me to Shakira and Alejandro Sanz, but we can go all over the place in our music tastes. She’ll roll her eyes when I’m in the mood for some Randy Travis.

My daughter sent me the link to the first song from Jack White’s upcoming solo album, which I immediately downloaded from iTunes. Incredible stuff:

The female singer was one of the back up singers in Jack White’s last project, a band and album with 75 year old rockabilly legend Wanda Jackson. They pretty much burned down Letterman’s studio with this performance:

When my mom and I make trips to/from my college, we love singing along to old musicals (Camelot/Sound of Music) or The Beatles, The Turtles, and other oldies bands.

We had an aha hour listening to the full Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon on a recent trip. Thought it would be old and futsy but it was deeply wonderful. Also Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense is a great car trip set. We just love Paul Simon’s Graceland album, too. Son has shared Wilco with hubby lately. Big hit.
