Musical Theatre Help

I am a high school senior living in Wisconsin, I love musical theatre more than anything, and am determined to pursue it in my future. Despite this, I am really overwhelmed with all the audition processes; I want to leave this state and go in a larger city far away, but I do not have the money to drive/fly to cross-country auditions, and do not want to spend thousands of dollars for a slim chance of getting accepted. I know many colleges allow online auditions, but they seem very daunting, and much less of a sure thing than live auditions. To get to the point, I would like any advice about what music theatre colleges either have reliable and simple online auditions, are near enough for me to make the drive, or would be worth me making an expensive trip for the audition. Thanks so much in advance!

There should be a “Unified” audition in Chicago area, probably in early February. Look up “Unified Auditions” (there might be another, more official name, but a Google search should get you there). Also, go to the Drama/Theatre/Musical Theatre threads on this site. They were very helpful and informative for me, when my son was embarking on the unfamiliar process. Start selecting some good audition material (you will need dramatic, as well as vocal). It is a huge undertaking, since admission is so selective. I won’t even get started on financial aid issues. Most schools have a geographic restriction (e.g. 500 miles) for on-line or DVD submissions. You’ll have to check them all individually. You will need to start reserving audition slots as soon as possible, and figuring out a timetable. Most of the elite schools will have some sort of audition in the mid-west. Good luck! Go to the CC Musical Theatre/Drama threads under “Majors,” though. There are some very knowledgeable, experienced participants with a trove of useful advice.

There are a couple of decent programs in Wisconsin- UW-Stevens Point and Viterbo. They would be great places to practice your auditions and you may even find you really like them. Definitely go to Chicago Unifieds. You will still need to arrange individual auditions for each school, but at least all of the auditions will be in the same city the same week!
