Hi! I’m an international student looking to audition this year and I’m wondering: what constitutes as a “musical theatre song”? Can one of my songs, for example, be a piece (theatre in nature) written by a musical theatre composer who did NOT include the song in his/her show? Basically, a show-less piece? Or is it safer to stick to songs that are more known and connected with an actual established show?

It is safer to stick to established shows, but it is possible to get away with a “show-less” piece. You’d have to blow them away, they tend to prefer established shows.

Also, it is my understanding that UMich is one of the “stricter” schools in terms of wanting EXACTLY what they ask for in their audition requirements. No deviations. However, as 16goingon17 said, if you really blow them away, I imagine they might forgive you. I personally wouldn’t care to risk it, though!
