My Absolute Favorite Forum Is Talk College Confidential! but I also really like ...

Ladies should definitely check out the Purse Forum - for the entertainment factor. :D

I love the “teardrops and tiny trailers” forum. Also HOUZZ - serious house candy!

Most forums can get nasty…even the comments on our local newspaper can get ugly when people disagree . I like Breitbart , but because I like to read about politics , but rarely respond in the comments section.

@Onward - thanks!

I frequent a political forum (not the one started by CCers). It’s fun for short bursts, but can send the old blood pressure skyrocketing.

Please add me to the list of those who would like the new CC politics link. Thanks

I often go read and only rarely post on a forum for nurses. Pretty interesting to see the various points of view of nurses. They can get quite contentious as well, but are also strongly moderated.

I also read some forums that are specifically about different health conditions–used to read webmd about allergies and asthma but they stopped having healthcare professional moderators when they stopped paying them. Also read some about other health conditions that are relevant to me and my family.

Flyertalk.com
I have been a member since it started.

Hunt, is that Nate Silver’s site?

I too would like a name or link for the political forum started by CC’ers. I need to hear people’s opinions about US bombing Iraq.

I will send it to you in a PM. Someone sent it to me. I hoped to find some interesting discussions, but it’s pretty one-sided and mostly rants of the “crazy uncle” variety.

Yes…that is Nate Silver’s site!

what is nate silver’s site?

I, too, would like the link to the CC politics forum. I used to enjoy the one here even if it did raise my blood pressure occasionally. :)

Greekchat is my other one because I’m an international volunteer for my sorority and keep up on a lot of things happening on a lot of campuses in relation to Greek Life.

Personally speaking, I no longer miss the old Elections and Politics forum. Unfortunately, it was my experience that the spin-off seemed to become increasingly more politically one-sided, and since I’m not interested in discourse in an echo chamber, I quit visiting it. The strength in CC’s politics forum was in the diversity of viewpoints on virtually any given issue, and the way in which it tended to stay civil, even when there was vehement disagreement (and that, admittedly, was achieved through vigilant moderation. And therein lay the problem for a site whose primary purpose is to provide useful and relevant information into the college admissions process).

Anyway, after I was weaned away from that intellectual “crack” (and yes, it was surprisingly addicting!), I realized just how much of my time, and emotional energy I had been expending in the political forums, and that it just was not healthy. I had turned into someone who was frequently anxious at best, and perpetually ticked-off at worst. I’m much happier now. I’ve also unplugged from the 24-hour news cycle, and have since filled that time with other intellectual pursuits and hobbies. H says I’m temperamentally much more pleasant to be around as well—heck, I even find my own company more tolerable. I do not look forward to the ramp up to the next Presidential and Congressional elections. I hope to avoid political ads like the plague, and learn only as much as is minimally necessary to make informed decisions at the poll. Currently, I tolerate ads on Youtube because I know that’s how they keep things going, but once political bombast is launched before every video you call up, I plan on installing some sort of ad-blocker on my computer and Ipad. One can only take but so much… :frowning:

I also like cruisecritic, flyertalk, and discovered a site called websleuths.com during the jahi mcmath debaucle. It was very informative.

I also drifted away from the “new” CC politics forum… not much activity.

Other places I hang out:
W&M sports message board
Capitals (hockey) message board
Drum Corps Planet (DCI message boards)
Cita Data (don’t post, just read)

Chowhound has some good discussions. Some of the city boards, like the one for Boston, tend to be nit-picky arguments about nothing but there’s a ton of good information from a handful of posters even there. Other boards on the site are less junior highish.

One interesting “board” is the comments section to Econbrowser, which is the joint blog of 2 economics professors. Falls in 2 categories: extremely informative posts by leading oil & gas industry experts and a coterie of absolute economic morons who argue with one of the poster’s politics and who repeatedly demonstrate why politics is beyond fact.
