My account has been compromised

My gmail account has been compromised. I dont know who did it. I fear that the moron would do something really stupid and send something stupid to dartmouth or other colleges.

Is there anything else i can do?
I mean should I write to Dartmouth with my new email address?

I don’t know about Dartmouth’s policies and web services (not yet, anyhow), but I know a thing or two about web security and can give a little bit of advice.

First off, decouple anything that’s linked to your gmail (if you haven’t already) that you can still decouple (password resets, bank statements, etc). If it is one of those cases that requires the email address itself to confirm, begin the process of emailing support about the problem.

Second, what exactly is the link between your email and Dartmouth? If it gets information/publications/surveys/whatever, you should contact Dartmouth anyway to get those going to your new email address rather than the compromised one.
If there’s anything more sensitive, you should contact Dartmouth immediately.

You should also send out a mass-email to people on your old email’s address book–if it is a hacking by someone who doesn’t know you, you can probably expect viruses to be going out with your old email address now.

As for what else you can do… I’m assuming you mean compromise as in the password is discovered, or the door to your account left open somehow in any case, and the password changed.
If the thief was sloppy, then your alternate email should still be the same, and you can go through the “I forgot my password” process to reset/retrieve (don’t remember which it is for gmail). You’ve probably already done that, but just suggesting it if you haven’t already.

Good luck with your email situation.

I have already have changed the passwords of other related services.

Well I am just concerned that the loser might send something to colleges with that account.

I have a got a new account now. I have not left any loop holes this time.

I am just trying to restrict the damage he can do until Gmail disables the account. which might take over 3 days.

Lets hope for the best! THanks Allorion! Congrats on your 300th post too :D
