My dream school

Pretty much UVA is my dream school. (OOS)

Do they look more at raw data and ranks (a la northwestern)
or at a variety of EC’s, leadership positions, and volunteer work as well?

Any information or (for those who were accepted) ideas on what made you seem most attractive to UVA would be mucho appreciated!

Thank you

I’m OOS and I was accepted so I think I can help. For a public college, I believe that UVa is very holistic. UVa takes into account several factors including the usual GPA, courseload rigor as well as other factors such as leadership position, volunteering, essay/personality, recommendation, etc etc. Further UVa is pretty generous when it comes to financial aid especially if your family is not that wealthy. They have a program called access UVA to help eliminate loans for very poor families.

I visited the college and campus (central grounds) is absolutely gorgeous. The students are happy and very friendly. The whole campus is very homely. I could easily picture myself coming here, but personally, I wantto pursue a degree in engineering and I felt that UVa’s engineering program is not nearly as strong as that of my other schools I was accepted to.

Good luck when applying next year (junior right?). Be yourself and be unique especially when it comes to your essay. UVa is definitely a competitive school when it comes to OOS admissions. I come from NY and several of my friends with higher GPA and SATs/ACT than that that of mine were waitlisted while I was accepted. I attribute this to my essay. Once again good luck and hopefully you get into your dream school.

I would rank the relative importance of various factors in the following way (from most to least):

Rank (top 10% is almost required)
GPA
Essay
SAT
EC’s
Recommendations

Having specific strength in any of the last three would make them roughly interchangeable. The process is indeed very holistic almost to a fault…

Doe anyone want to chance me?

I am currently a sophomore, next year I’ll embrace hell as a junior.
Currently, my GPA is a 4.31. Freshman year i took honors language arts (LA), honors world history, geometry, honors biology, and spanish 2.

This year, I’m in honors LA II, AP US history 1, honors chemistry, honors algebra 2/trig, and spanish 3.

Next year, I’ll be taking honors LA III, APUS 2, honors physics, honors precalc, and honors spanish 4 (honors spanish 2 and 3 aren’t offered at my school.)

My grades are usually A’s with one or 2 B+s.

as extracurriculars go, I’m on the marchin drumline (I play quads), symphonic band, concert band, and junior jazz band where i play guitar. I am also the layout editor (big deal for a soph) for our school newspaper, which wins many awards. I am on the Varsity swim team and varsity golf team, and I’ll be receiving a varsity letter once the season is over. Next year, I’ll be running for student council and a peer leader. I’ll also be admitted to NHS and I’m going to join the academic team. I’m also going to join the pit band for the winter musical and try to run for a spot in the FBLA club.

I’ve done a decent amount of service hours and church work for Confirmation, and this summer, I’ll be attending a program called Understanding American Business. I was one of three people from my school invited to this program, so it’s a big honor.

I haven’t taken the SAT’s but my PSAT was math 620, cr 640, and writing 600 =/. I am also in the top 10-15% of my class regarding class rank.

What shot do I have at UVA right now?
