My grandparents don't get it?...

I don’t live with my mom. My Dad passed away 2-16-2004 so yeah he’s out of the question. I live with my mom’s parents. If I lived with her I wouldn’t of made it to age 18. I would of killed my self long before 16 years of age.
I thought she was bad her parents are worse. They want me to go to college to become a failure(not by them they think some one who can come up with a whole plot of a novel randomly should be something they aren’t … an uncreative deadbeat like the rest of society.) I LIKE computer related things not WANT to do it for a living. But they want me to go to college for computers thinking what I have WANTED to do for a living for the past 2 or 3 years is just a stupid little phase that will pass in a couple days. They don’t just WANT me to go to college they’re FORCING me to go to college. Doing so might I add is like not just putting a fully loaded gun in my hand but putting it to my head and helping me pull the trigger. They won’t accept it that I am different than any one else on this god damned planet. NORMAL TEACHING METHODS HAVE FAILED NUMEROUS TIMES. I am not stupid. I don’t learn like the rest of the 7 billion people on this planet. Normal teaching methods require you to read a book and take notes. My learning method is by listening while doing something completely different such as playing a video game.
Plus they define SUCCESS as getting paid a lot of money. But you see I am a free willed free thinking human being. My definition of success is doing the “job” you love more than anything for a living even if you don’t make a lot of money or even make ends meat. You just have to enjoy what you’re doing. And in a way with out all this college stuff I am already successful so long as I am allowed to write books that I love to read. Not all books that I write I enjoy reading. Those are ones that other people have requested I write. Because they like my writing style and they’ve had an idea for a story they just don’t know how to write it they way I do. If you go on figment.com search Joshua Hixon for Author/username You’ll see somethings I’ve at one point enjoyed writing maybe not reading but Life In The Suburbs is probably my most enjoyed by others and at one point myself. I started writing it when I was teetering on the thin line of continuing on living and or committing suicide. Since that day I’ve enjoyed writing literature even if it’s only for me to read because when I write a fictional story I feel like I am at peace with the world. NO ONE I Know understands that though they tell me writing ain’t gonna get me no where computers is where I belong.

Looking at the excerpts of your writing on the website as well as your post, I’m sorry to tell you that while you may have a lively imagination and some good story ideas, you are very deficient in grammar, punctuation and usage. At this point, with your current skills, a life as a writer is a pipe dream. So you will have to find some way to earn a living. How do you propose to meet your basic needs with no skills whatsoever? While no one can force you to attend college, and computers may not be the right field for you, you do need some realistic plan for the future.

Sounds to me like you already know what you need to do: When you turn 18, get a job and move out of your grandparents home. Work during the day to support yourself and write during your free time. Take writing classes at your community college if possible. If and when you are ready to go to college, you can return to school and maybe your grandparents will still be willing to help. If you are never ready, then approach them anyway, about how much you appreciate their good intentions and continue to chart your own path. That’s what adults do - without a lot of drama.

If you want to write, you can write. Actually, you can do whatever you want as an adult pretty much.

Also, you don’t need to go to school to learn how to write. Most writing classes I’ve taken have been completely useless. Just start writing and get good editing later. But yeah, I agree with the above poster. You sound like about almost every wannabe writer out there: terrible. I’m not saying my writing is any better, but I’m just being honest. Make sure you find some other way to make a living first before you’re writing.

But Stephanie Meyer made millions out of her writing. lol. So I guess there are no standards in the literary world.

As for most of the “books” on said website(got an infraction for putting it in post(and the curse words) I assume besides the obvious reasons(*s) since the websitename.com was hyper linked in e-mail) they were written pre senior year. I have in fact already graduated from HS. So I am already 18.
Some grammar problems in some stories are intentional. Not because I messed up but as character development. Some though might be actual mistakes. Ones “Microsoft Works Word Processor” didn’t catch. Like switching quite and quiet or some thing where there is an actual word that the error spells. If it is “Life In The Suburbs” well in said program it is like 22 pages. 22 pages+ADD/ADHD= not patient enough to read through(another possible error through and threw. They sound the same and I do talk to my self out loud when typing them so if they sound right then I might not notice them when tired.)
On my grand parents forcing me I say a different field and they b&c(not defining the first letter but the second is Complain) and say that writing isn’t a “Successful” career(not exact words but I had it in my mind but then I forgot it XP) and that Computers is a better profession(that’s the word). They just want me to go for computers and my big mouth said I enjoy using Forth programming language and they PRESSURE me to sign up at Corning Community College for something to do with computer programming. Now if the college had Forth programming language I wouldn’t be here seeking advice(failing in my attempts as I’ve never been good at asking for help). But Forth which can do the same stuff as C programming language if you know what you’re doing is not as popular. I am talking CCC in New York State.
Other grammar issues(the ones on the forum) I am used to using the TAB key to indent. It doesn’t work here nor on almost every website I’ve been on especially the website I mentioned in my first post here(again avoiding its actual name due to infraction had it in link form in the E-mail I received). And the text editor there doesn’t have spell/grammar check unlike most websites I go to. No red lines under a word like teh(just an example) or under any mistakes unlike this post and my last post. This place underlines the above example, my last name Hixon, the generic name website(in this post), ADHD, Corning Community Colleges initialization CCC. There maybe others in the first post but I’d have to either go in to edit it or copy and paste it here and look for them and I remember it doing my last name because even programs like Microsoft Office and Microsoft Works do it.

Your grandparents can’t physically make you go to college. But they CAN (and probably will) stop supporting you if you refuse to go. That leaves one option: get a full time job, move out, write in the evenings. End of issue.

It’s not just the grammar. Your thoughts are not well presented. I read your post and my head hurt. You are not good at expressing your thoughts in a logical, coherent, manner, that makes it easy for the reader to follow. The drama and metaphors cloud the information you are trying to convey. Your insistence of using a (poor) literary style of writing on an informational forum makes it very tedious for the reader to tell what you are actually asking.

The bottom line is you have two choices. You can either accept your grandparents offer to pay for an education. It’s their dime so to speak and they are putting stipulations on it that you study a certain subject. That’s their choice. Your second choice is to get a job so that you can support yourself, become independent, and make your own decisions. As an earlier poster said…that’s what adults do.

T …#1

Yes, I couldn’t finish reading either of your posts - your writing style and poor use of grammar and punctuation made my head hurt too.

Your grandparents must be very frustrated with you and realize you need an education to support yourself. If you choose to be hard headed, that is your young choice - like everyone else stated - that requires you take care of you - get a job and write till your heart’s content.

Personally, I would take the free college education!

You’re 18. Are you shackled to your bed? What is keeping you there if you are so dead set against doing what your g-parents want you to do?

If this is your view of us, why are you asking us for advice?

is it possible for you to do both at the same time (take the classes and write)?

I started laughing there and couldn’t continue. Is this the 5th post by a new member in the last 2 weeks bemoaning a crappy home situation? With increasingly poor grammar, I might add. I’m thinking this is a ■■■■■, if a mod could confirm the IPs on them are identical.

I agree. Please don’t feed the ■■■■■■.

I got this far. Sadly, there are real people who think this.
