My Head is going to Explode!!!!!!

I need to vent! I decided to start Atkins diet today, so I went to Waffle House to get pork chops and eggs to go. I told them to hold the toast, then she told me it also came with hash browns, which I told her to also hold, that I was starting a no carb diet.

The waitress brought me my bag, and I handed her a $20, and she brought me my change of $10.70. Well, the order should have ben $6.40 plus tax, so I told her she gave me incorrect change. She then proceded to tell me that because I had refused the hashbrowns and toast, that she had to charge me a la carte! I was dumbfounded. I told her that made no sense, that I just did not want to throw away the food, and that I had ordered this previously (not the same location) and was only charged the $6.40. She then asked her manager, and she also told me that I had to be charged a la carte. I was livid by this time, explaining to her that their reasoning made NO sense, but they would not change their minds. I told them to give me the d*** hashbrowns and toast, which they promptly did, and then adjusted my bill to reflect the $6.40.

I’m tempted to take back the hashbrowns and toast, and just leave them on the counter and leave. Am I crazy to be irked?

That is truly ridiculous that it costs more to get less! And you did the right thing and ordered more so you could spend less. Then, I would have taken the hash browns and toast out of the bag and said, “no thanks” and left.

I have the toast and hashbrowns just sitting in the bottom of the plastic to go bag, and the more I think about it, the more I am leaning towards taking it back.

It’s OK they hired her because she can’t figure out why she only earns $1.35 an hour. A common qualification for working at the WH.

You will recover… She on the otherhand has been sentenced to working at the WH…

Take it back and get a refund.

Tell them: they were cold!

(I had to open this thread with that title!)

Andy Rooney did a funny piece years ago abot how less is often more. He went through en entire piece on how food packaged with less fat cost more, that ordering out and getting less often cost more.

If you get smaller portions of everything by getting a platter, and they fixed larger portions of the two things you did want, then they have a point. But you know and I know that they were fixing the SAME DAM* THING, just leaving off the two items, and trying to charge more.

It’s like going to McDonalds and arguing with them as I do when I just want a sandwich and a drink. But the combo is only $10 more for LARGE FRIES AND A LARGE DRINK. But I don’t want large fries or a large drink.

No wonder as a nation we have a weight problem and a wasted food problem. And there are people starving, even here in the states. Forget about those kids in China.

You are only crazy to be doing Atkins! Sorry, but it’s simply not the successful way to weight loss.

Do you remember Jack Nicholson in “Five Easy Pieces?” He never did get the g-d*** chicken salad sandwich! :D

franglish, I immediately thought of the same thing. :D

Although you have a right to be upset you have to put it in the context of where you went, the waffle house, where I expect it’s not the most selective employer out there. You already didn’t get anywhere with the local talent and management. If you’re still upset about this and motivated, then maybe contact the corporate office and as nicely as you can, in the context of helping them out with a practice they might not be aware of going on at one of their restaurants, inform them of the issue. Make sure you inform them that when you requested that they hold the hash browns and toast they didn’t in turn inform you that it would cost you more than if you receive it but just threw it away which isn’t exactly a ‘green’ practice. Explain that if they had explained the cost increase to you at the time of the order you wouldn’t have been so upset. Also explain just how illogical it all is to a typical customer of theirs.

If you do the above they’re liable to compensate you and correct that restaurant (we’ve done this before with good results). If in fact they just back up their policy then you know to go somewhere other than the WH - maybe a family owned place that’ll be more flexible rather than a corprate one.

Have you checked into the South Beach Diet?

ucsd_ucla-dad, that sounds like good advice on how to approach WH. I am just so irritated because it is so illogical!

MOWC and dad, I know Atkins isn’t the best diet by any means to go on, I just needed a quick fix, and I did this years ago with fast good results. I am only doing it for one month for the results I am going for. I do prefer the South Beach diet, but the weight loss won’t be quick enough for the time frame I have to work with.

When you are on Atkins Diet, one tends to explode more often. Losing the starch and accompanying fats is detrimental to other peoples tolerance level. You are OTOH have lost your “comfort foods”

Did Atkins for 3 years. Its a **. Finally was able acquiesce to metformin and everybody is now happy :). Sortof. When on Atkins, it was very difficult to maintain my sugar levels and I was moody (W complained). Now off of Atkins, I’m not as moody because its now easier to maintain sugar levels (W now **es that I eat too much starch).

Have a steak on me. :)

I do have to agree that phase one of South Beach is not only healthier, but if you stick to it longer then just the first 2 weeks, weigh loss mimics that of Atkins. And you might feel better.

I have a similar “less is more” story. I was looking into flights to Germany. It costs more to fly from NY to Frankfurt than to fly from NY to Frankfurt (on the same plane) and then take another plane to Hamburg.

I would have been irritated, too, GAmom.

The big mistake was thinking anything at a Waffle House makes sense. We have had a few issues at multiple locations across the country over the years. Being overcharged or receiving less than the proper change are more likely than not for some interesting reason. We won’t go there anymore, it was so chronic.

Customer service - where has it gone?

GA2012MOM, the Atkins Diet is hard to stick to, and expensive if you do, but for losing a LOT of weight quickly, it can’t be beat. 10 lbs. a month for three or four months is not out of the question, all while eating as much as you feel like eating.

My suggestion to you is to use it for as long as you keep losing weight, and then try to transition to a more typical, lower-fat, high-fiber diet coupled with regular exercise. In the meantime, enjoy your steaks and butter and cream and…oh my.

Good luck!

haha. Vegetarian here. Encountered this many times. It is nonsensical. If we go to Taco Bell and I order something that normally has meat but tell them to substitute beans for the meat they charge me extra for the beans! Makes no sense. The beans don’t cost them more than the meat.
Never been to a waffle house but it doesn’t surprise me.

My thoughts:

Waffle House pricing policies: Life is too short and serenity too precious to get so worked up over something so trivial. Either take the hash browns or not and move on.

Atkins Diet: Everyone I know who has tried it has lost weight. None of them have been able to stick with the diet, and they gained it all back when they abandoned it. It’s not a sustainable lifestyle.

My sister stuck with it the longest. But she gave it up when her hair started falling out in clumps.

I have had encounters with waiters/waitresses who have made mistakes in their charges, usually a $3-$4 difference. I’ve let it go just because it’s not worth my effort to make them understand what they’d done wrong after several attempts. Do something that will make you laugh instead.

Funny, When I was 17 I lost 75 lbs in 2.5 months. Im sure it doesn’t work.
