My mom used AI to write a lot of parents statements for me. I was on a Ten Schools webinar a few months ago that specifically said not to use AI to write parent statements, even for non-native English speakers. I don’t know what to do, it’s too late to change it with only five days until the deadline. These statements are the only thing I have left to submit. Will it affect my chances of getting in, and if so, by how much?
That is not ideal, although you may be fine. Why is 5 days not enough for some reworking?
I really just got started on our Parent Statements, so I certainly hope it is not too late!
Not too late. Your mom needs to know it may be checked for AI. If your mom can’t do it or is not willing to do it, will it affect you? I have no idea. But you will suffer less stress if she rewrites. Is she an English speaker? If not admissions could advise. She could write it the language she is comfortable with perhaps.
Consider translating the statements into Canadian so that any AI detector is less likely to flag the writings.
And, yes, I do wish you luck.
Yeah, that isn’t good, but probably not deadly either. AI detectors aren’t that accurate so a school would be reluctant to change their decision over it.
If it is a student’s essay, then there could be a bigger problem.
I agree with this. I have no idea what goes on behind the scenes at the moment, but if schools are making substantive decisions based on AI detectors of parent essays, I would be surprised.
Honestly, if I were an AO, I fully would expect most parents are using LLMs to polish their essays, though NOT to write them from scratch or make up content or ideas. I have no clue why they would even care about that sort of use, to me that is actually making the process more equitable, as some people may hire people to help them edit, or due to their own jobs and educational levels. As much as admissions want to keep their own biases in check, I am sure it is hard not appreciate a finely crafted letter vs. a clunky one. Heck, that is an advantage of going to private /prep HS, the lovely letters of rec. for college.
yeah, my parents only used AI to translate what they wrote in another language
Using an AI translator is not the same as using AI to write the statement.
Adding: Your parents are doing their best to support your application. If you do not get into boarding school, the use of AI translate for the parent statement will not be the deciding factor.
