My parents won't let me leave

My parents won’t let me go to UT Austin. They think I’m too “social” and don’t trust me. I barely go out because half of the time they don’t let me and when I do go out I don’t even party. They don’t think I’m mature enough to live on my own and they don’t think I can handle it on my own. They also think I will go off the deep end and ignore my morals and disregard my religion. It’s really frustrating that they don’t want to let me go to the recently scored no. 30 school in the world. What should I do? How do I convince them to let me go?

Which religion and what ethnicity are you? I’m assuming male. First generation college and/or citizen?

I’m first gen college college student. Both of parents are immigrants from Mex and I’m Catholic.

This is a common issue for first generation Latino students. Usually more so for daughters. There are a few CC threads on the subject that you can probably search. In general, the best advice is to find an ally who will speak on your behalf with your parents. This could be a priest, community leader, teacher, respected relative, etc. Your parents need to be assured that you are neither abandoning them, your culture and your religion and that UT Austin has a vibrant Latino student community that will support and enhance you as Latino American.
