My Teachers Approve Of Resume Padding

My writing teacher wants us to sign up to getting newsletters for opportunties to write for the local newspaper (syracuse post standard). There is a section in the newspaper where they devote only to teen work (The page is called Voices). However, even our teacher has admitted to it, it’s really, really easy to get in Voices. He said even the crappiest essays and writing have been published in the newspaper. He also said that most kids who sign up and do submit writing do get published. Plus, there is no requirement to signing up. You just have to go to a Central New York school.

But here’s the catch: He said the best and only reason you should sign up is to make your college application look good and every resume you’ll ever make look good, because you’re a published writer.

Are you kidding me? It’s almost like self-publishing. If it’s that easy to get published, then it’s not presitigous.

And now, he is forcing ME to sign up. I hate writing and so do a lot of kids in my class. However, everyone already signed up.

Last semester, the kids that got published were bragging about how awesome they were. I didn’t know how to respond, but I didn’t know what Voices were.

Well, tell for yourself: [Voices - syracuse.com](Voices - syracuse.com)

PRESITIGOUS OR NOT?

Well if EVERYONE in your class signs up and they can only publish 3, it’s just become a little more competitive, no? :P

I don’t think so, because there is no limit on how many there can be published. Though topics don’t go daily, I heard that the newspaper just publishes the essays daily. I heard that if there is not enough room, the editor would put it in the Letters of the Editor section. Everyone else gets at least a publication on the website.

Wow - this is outrageously bad. Did they even edit these? “I think that every teenager should take driver’s education because it will help you learn good driving skills that you will carry with you for the rest of your life.” Every teenager -> you???

“It’s very sad that many young people have died in auto accidents.”

Thanks John Madden.

I hate writing, but my writing teacher made sign up and he’s reading these articles every Monday. It was actually HOMEWORK to sign up.

School pride leads to implicit support for resume padding. :p

/God I love being so cynical

maybe it’s a bit more than “resume padding”… If the articles are as bad as you say they are, he probably wants some more people to write articles that are better. I doubt he is supporting “resume padding”, but rather trying to convince you to signup and it seems to me like he did a pretty dam good job

So many Driving articles… o_O
