N.C. State vs Wofford

N.C. State, College of Humanities and Social Science (CHASS)
Pros: Great academic reputation, engagement reputation
Cons: CHASS does not have Business Major, a lot of High School friends deferred or denied. Essentially starting from scratch socially. Don’t want to walk away from a College that really wanted me there in Wofford
Cost: 28K/year
Special Considerations: I live approximately 1-2 miles from campus
Intended Major: Political Science/History, but also like Business possibly

Wofford
Pros: Great academic reputation, engagement reputation,
Cons: Further away from home, don’t want to walk away from a great opportunity at NC State, will have to maintain grades for scholarship
Cost: 33K/year
Special Considerations: Good guardrails (Dad went there, knows the community and some professors even), Club Sports seems easy to get into - 2 sport athlete in H.S.
Intended Major: Political Science/History and maybe Business

Ultimately, I think I’d like to pursue law, so Law School would be a next step after college. I believe NC State may position me slightly better for law school, but the flexibility of majors at Wofford is appealing at age 18, not exactly wanting to fully commit, yet.

Do you have to pay the entire cost out of pocket? You mention a scholarship at Wofford - does the scholarship bring the cost down to $33K/year, or is it $33K minus the scholarship?

I don’t know that I’d let the lack of a business major prevent me from attending a school - you can major in anything and go into business. You don’t even seem set on a business major. Starting from scratch socially, IMO, is a neutral thing. College is a good time to branch out - there can be significant cons to relying on old patterns of socializing. Similarly, I’m not understand what your dad knowing the community and some professors at Wofford offers you as a tangible benefit; your dad knows Wofford as it was XX years ago, when he attended. I am positive that the college and community has changed a lot since then. You can go to law school for either.

It sounds to me like you prefer Wofford - if that’s the case, then I think you should go there!

Hi Juillet-

The cost I supplied is the total cost per year, and my parents will be paying for this without student loans and yes, the scholarship of around 30 (24 merit and 6 need) brings the cost to 33K.

Thanks for your comments on the Dad thing, this is a good point. I was just emphasizing that there is a community at Wofford already that I can turn to where at NC State it is a big unknown.

Thank you so much for you comments!

So the issue seems to be: How much are you willing to grow during your undergraduate years ?

Do you want the comfort & security of familiarity or do you want the excitement & challenges of entering an unfamiliar environment ?
