Nashville, the TV show

No. I don’t know. I think it’s just a backup musician. But it has been cool to watch & see a few people we’re acquainted with in the backup bands :)

I caught up yesterday and today. Well, almost caught up - I have to watch the one that aired last night. I’m enjoying it.

I love Juliette and Avery together. Highway 66 should sign HIM.

Scarlet annoys me too. I don’t think she’s that good a singer, and her personality is increasingly irritating. Although I really do think that Scarlet and Gunnar are a great singing duo, much better together than either is alone. When they sang for Kelly Clarkson, I thought she was going to say “Why don’t you two record together?”

I also thought that Connie Britton sounded MUCH better in the last episode when she was singing with Deacon than she ever has before in the show.

Do people think the uproar over Juliette’s twisted clip is realistic? Even after people confirmed what she actually said? And why isn’t she out there on talk shows putting out her side of the story? What really ticks me off about the whole thing is that the show seems to be taking the stance that if Juliette were in fact an atheist she would DESERVE this treatment!

Sadly, I do think it’s pretty realistic. Makes me think of the Dixie Chicks and Westboro baptist church and Freedom fries all rolled into one.

I’ve been thinking she might end up on Rayna’s label as well!

swimcat beat me too it. Yep, it’s realistic. Just look at the Dixie Chicks.

At this point in the series, I don’t think Teddy adds any value to the show

I don’t think Teddy ever added any value to the show. :)

The Juliette=home wrecker/tramp thing is stupid. Nobody cares; if they did Britney Spears wouldn’t have a career. The atheist treatment is not that far off base, but I don’t like the way they are handling it. No character has yet suggested that Juliette’s spiritual beliefs or lack thereof are properly her own.

When you’re an entertainer, maybe nobody believes they are. I feel like even if they do, making that point might be shifting the focus a bit since Juliette DOES believe in God-- the point isn’t that they are trashing her for her beliefs and she should have her right to be an atheist, they are trashing her for something she didn’t even really say.

At least, I thought they had said that she does believe. Did I make that up?

Somebody said it. They even showed her going into a church by herself, presumably to pray.

As an atheist, this whole thing ticks me off to no end, though.

I can understand that. I was an atheist for most of my life. I think that’s just the culture in country music, and in the south. To me, if the point is that her words are being taken out of context, it would be distracting to make a big deal that she doesn’t have to believe in god if she doesn’t want to-- she does, that’s irrelevant. And if my career were circling the drain that is not a stand I would want to make if I wasn’t actually an atheist.

I think I would like it if she came to Rayna’s label. Their dynamic was entertaining and they’re hardly ever in the same room anymore, and Jeff Fordham is becoming increasingly irritating. I was really disturbed by the way he talked to Juliette in this last episode. I wouldn’t mind seeing him become less relevant, but then who would our antagonist be?

Do we think Lamar really had anything to do with Teddy’s attempted assassination? My gut instinct was no, and that Teddy is just going bonkers. But I wouldn’t be shocked if I was wrong, it seems too early to tell what the real story is. Lamar is slimy but I just don’t see him going after the father of his granddaughter like that.

I agree Consolation. What rankled me is that Rayna’s reaction was written as ‘what a dumb thing to say’ rather than any type of comment then or later on whether it’s dumb or wrong for the public to insist Juliette share their superstitions or convictions.

Interesting that nobody but the mayor seems too concerned about who shot Mrs Teddy, however.

Oh, I agree, in terms of the show’s plot.

Right. It’s like believer=acceptable and OF COURSE the fans would go insane if a star were not one. The only defense is “I know you’re a believer,” and no one has yet said that it is none of the fans’ business whether she is or not. She’s not trading on religion in her music. If she were singing “Jesus Take the Wheel” it would be another matter.

Speaking of which, I wonder what will happen to poor Will. Has there ever been an “out” country star? I don’t think k.d. laing counts.

I think Lamar might go after Teddy if he thought Teddy was the one who ratted him out to the Feds. What will he do when he finds out it was Tandy?

I’m still trying to figure out what point the writers were attempting to make by having Juliette’s God comment taken out of context. Was it an attack on the media for stirring the pot? Was it an attack on the religious right for going way to the right? Was it a dis to those who follow country music? Was it an attack on non Christians for holding a different set of beliefs? Was it a lesson in fidelity and the consequences of poor choices? They intentionally made this a big issue, but to what point???

Chely Wright is the only gay I know in country music. No known men are out, though rumors have swirled.

I wonder if it wasn’t trying to make a point and was just a plot device to throw Juliette’s career over the edge. She was already in trouble with conservatives and moral high-grounders for having an affair (and let’s face it, much of her audience is going to be conservative, or young daughters of conservative parents) and this extra scandal may be the straw that breaks the camels back. Unless the point is that Edgehill is going to fire her so she is going to end up on Rayna’s label, I’m not sure why they would feel the need to do that… we’ll have to wait and see.

I wonder what happens to Will and whatsherface if Juliette gets fired or jumps ship.

My heart broke for Scarlett a bit when she was asking Gunnar, “didn’t you feel it?” when they were playing Fade Into You for Kelly Clarkson and he said, “I just felt the music,” she looked horrified. I always thought she still had feelings for him, and that explains more of why she is blowing up with Zoey. I wish they hadn’t broken up in the first place if she is still in love with him. But, he has clearly moved on now so I wonder what will happen to her.

Yeah, that was cold on Gunnar’s part.

Yeah I agree, it is a plot device, just a really annoying one.

Re: Gunnar and Scarlet, they really need to start writing Scarlet as an adult. Apparently she has a college degree (so we’ve been told) and is good looking and talented - making her an insecure little girl is getting tired.

I have to think that Lamar is behind what’s going in with Teddy; otherwise that whole thing is just a weird tangent.

With Teddy’s tantrum in the lawyer’s office my first thought was that maybe Teddy is going to go off the deep end, but if he doesn’t seem like he has a screw loose the next few episodes then I suppose you’re right. I don’t have any other ideas.

Do you think Lamar would have hired someone to go after Teddy at an event Rayna was attending? She could have just as easily been shot as Peggy.

I think it’s set up to look like Lamar is behind it. (Certainly Tandy thinks her father had somewhat to do with her mother’s death. So, maybe Lamar does have it in him to arrange Teddy’s death.) However, I don’t discount Teddy’s past. Wasn’t he involved in something shady? It may have come back to haunt him.

I never thought Dixie Chicks when Juliette’s troubles came about. I thought of John Lennon’s remark: “We’re more popular than Jesus now.”
