National College Match - 2009-2010

Just a warning not to make the same mistake I just did. I am trying to get stuff done early so I made 5 copies of the 30 page 2008 tax return(including 1099’s and w-2’s) that colleges want mailed to them as part of the financial aid documentation. But I made the copies before I saw that the colleges want the applicants full name and the word Questbridge on every single page of the tax/financial stuff. So now I have to hand write that on every page. 5x30=150 times!

I forgot to mention:

I got a fee waiver for the CSS/PROFILE. 2008 income: $21,292. 2009 estimated income: $24,301. Qualify for federal reduced lunch in 2008 (when I went to public school).

applicannot did you list all the schools you are applying to including Regular Decision?

and does anyone know if there is any way I can use the MIT application for regular decision. Maybe withdraw QB app if I am not Matched?

I included all of the schools, including the RD schools. I didn’t really want to because I had to use estimates and so I wanted to be able to change the information when I got the tax returns officially… but the differences will only be about $1000, so I wasn’t worried - nothing will change so significantly that it would impact my financial aid, and at my level (less than $25,000 + Automatic 0 EFC for FAFSA - any assets) it doesn’t make a significant difference.

How long does it take to complete the CSS/PROFILE

I think more questions on the CSS PROFILE form come from colleges that expect applicants with sophisticated strategies for hiding assets.

It took me about an hour and a half to fill out the CSS/PROFILE, but most of the information I filled in were blanks and zeros. We have no assets, are not self-employed, have no farms or business, don’t own a home, have no medical expenses… etc. Basically I just did some estimates and filled out the incomes for my mom and I (I think I estimated my mom’s a little high for next year, but the math says it’s right - just seems odd, long story short), triple-checked my work, and sent it in. If you have special circumstances and/or your answers are not as clear cut as mine, it could take significantly longer. It was a lot of pages. Plus, I only had to enter information for one parent (I have a non-custodial).

applicantnot: did u get the CSS waiver through Questbridge or through CSS College Board?

Also, does that fee waiver mean you can send it in to all colleges free?? because i know they charge lkike 16$ to send per college.

anyone know where i can request an extension? can’t find the page anymore…
my counselor’s rec STILL isn’t in after 4 tries :(

emcc24, at this point, I would call QB and tell them that your counselor’s rec. didn’t go through after 4 tries.

My question again : I’m an international. I have no idea where to start looking for financial forms and stuff.

Okay thanks applicannot. emcc24 there was a link to the extension a couple pages back…maybe you could email Questbridge? Hope it works out.

And for supplemental recommendations…I have two other people who I think could write one for me (Besides 2 teacher recs). Would it be alright if they both mailed their recs in to the colleges I am Matching to by November 2nd?

The waiver comes from CollegeBoard. When you finsih and go to submit, it will tell you that you are qualified for the waiver (if you do of course.)

Do you have to submit in order to find out if you qualify for a waiver? Is there any other way of knowing?

Mattsmom if you are still here
I assume the list is her order of pref.
I went to see Claremont colleges but did not “get” them… must be the weather.
Why Bowdoin? photo? It’s cooold. Do Wes!

The waiver came through the CSS/PROFILE, but if you don’t qualify, there are also a limited number of QuestBridge CSS/PROFILE fee waivers that you must apply for. You don’t have to submit your CSS/PROFILE to find out if you qualify for the fee waiver, but you do have to get pretty close to it. The fee waiver grants you the cost of the CSS/PROFILE ($9) plus the cost of sending the CSS/PROFILE to six colleges (at $16 each). Given the new CSS/PROFILE fee waiver and given that I just had another application fee waived (Washington University in St. Louis) without having to send my CollegeBoard fee waivers, I may throw in another safety/low match so that if worse comes to worse, I have three low matches / safeties to compare. It would only cost $26…

I have an extra pay in October, which is a GODSEND. If I believed in God, I’d so be praising him right now. So now I can cover any college costs up to about $150. I think right now I’m looking at:

SAT Scores sent –> $50 (Pitt and GW received with last SAT round, confirmed)
Transcripts sent –> $20 (hopefully, I think I tricked my counselor into not charging me for one / he felt sorry for me and did QuestBridge/Common App under the table)

Which is a grand total of $70 for seven schools. NONE TOO BAD! Every Common App school I add from now on is going to add $26 to that total… also not a bad deal. I might add Emory or Boston University or another school depending on my December 1st return (Harvard has SUCH an easy application for such a shot at good FA…).

Also, even though Yale says you have to have a zero EFC to qualify for the match, the website says something a little different. It says that you have to have a parent contribution of zero. This means that you just have to have an income of under $60,000 with no or regular assets. So it does NOT have to be a 0 FAFSA EFC.

@powerbomb and tomjones–
thanks! found the link and i’m most definitely calling tomorrow.

i filled out the CSS profile with the madre last night. it took a couple hours but i found this walkthrough that explained most parts of it. it’s a year old but still pretty helpful!
http://www.tuitioncoach.com/collegecost/pdf/cssProfile.pdf</a></p>

Omg counselor rec STILL doesn’t say completed…just kill me now.

How very weird… I attend one of the richest schools in the my county, which is one of the richest counties in the country, and the counseling office only want us to provide our own stamps and envelopes and charge us $3 per transcript over the three free ones that we receive. I can’t imagine paying $20 per transcript…

Julia, my teacher’s status still says Not Started. I emailed QB asking whether they’re backed up with the amount of faxes or if they actually did not receive her fax, but they haven’t replied yet. I’m assuming they’re just very busy organizing everything.

@driscol: Same here! I emailed and told them the situation. I asked them if i should be requesting an extension or if i should just wait it out…they haven’t gotten bacl to me either :/

Hopefully we’ll know by tomorrow…

I double-checked my QB application at least a dozen times, but somehow overlooked the fact that I did not include my class rank. My class rank is included on my transcript, but I doubt they will see it. Any thoughts on this? I have a high ranking, so I was hoping that would help compensate for a relatively low GPA caused by a sophomore year crisis that I talked about in my autobiography essay.
