National College Match - 2009-2010

So where would I put something like Columbia Science Honors Program? It is a highly selective science program. Does this go under extracurriculars or academic honors?

I saw my score reports that my counselor sent to QuestBridge. It had all of my ACT Test scores (I took it two times). Do I need to put both of my test result on my QuestBridge application? I am somewhat confused.

heyalll, I’m about to send in my application! :smiley: Does anyone know if I should wait until I get my new ACT scores? Do they even come out before the deadline?

What if I want to use SCORE CHOICE? Where do I obtain a score report that excludes the scores that I don’t want them to see?

@Powerbomb: No one here is responding to your question because most likely no one here knows. Don’t waste you time and email QB directly.

PLEASE HELP!!!:

I have been volunteering since the summer of my soph. year very intensively, however I have lost track of my time spent there.

For the college prep scholarship, i put down hours that now looking back, seems really wrong (in terms of both hours spent and week/year, basically, i put down extra hr/wk, yet fewer wk/yr that what i actually spent).

HOWEVER, if I change my hours spent on the College Match app, will QB see me as lying?! I really am not…I think the last time I made a mistake in putting down my hours… /sigh…what to do?

@powerbomb
On CollegeBoard.com, go to My SAT, click ‘View My Score Report (and Essay)’ for the scores you want to send, and click ‘Print Full Score Report.’ That will create a pdf file of several pages but since all the scores are on the first page, you can just print that.

IMO, the ONLY school that is worth forgoing the Match process for ED/EA/SCEA is Penn, assuming Penn is your first choice. Penn gives a huge boost to almost all ED applicants, unlike other Ivies. Penn accepts 50% of their class in ED, and the acceptance rate is like 30%. You could also incorporate many of the extra things from the Questbridge application into the Common Application.

Penn has also said that they will reduce the number of CollegeMatches for this year, because they believe that it is unnecessary and that the quality of low-income applicants from normal applications are just as good.

So if Penn is truly your first choice, I would recommend using Questbridge for RD because Questbridge is excellent, but then apply ED Penn.

Ds’s school-reported weighted and UW GPA is very different from the one he gets when he uses the scale on the QB website. Anyone know whether the GC is asked for those numbers? In which case, there would be a huge discrepancy.

Code H, I’d change the hours to reflect what you believe to be most accurate. I don’t think they will think you are a liar, and I do think you should correct your earlier mistake.

YDS, the FAQ regarding unweighted and weighted GPAs says:

“If your school does not provide you with an unweighted GPA, you will need to calculate it using the following table”
“If your school does not do this for you, you will need to calculate your weighted GPA using the following table:”

I understand that to mean you are to list the unweighted and weighted GPA provided by your school and only use the provided tables if the school does not provide either the UW or W GPA. Whatever GPAs your HS calculates is no doubt on the transcript. If you have concerns, on the additional information section I’d include a brief explanation of how the school calculates the GPA and, if you want, what the GPAs would be using the QB table. The info on how GPA is calculated should be on the secondary school report submitted by the guidance counselor, but you may want to draw more attention to it.

His 300-word additonal info section is chock full, but I guess he’ll have to trim something. The transcript doesn’t provide an UW, but the GC said if asked to report one it would be more than .4 lower than the QB rubric!

Since it isn’t on the transcript, I’d go by the “If your school does not provide you with an unweighted GPA, you will need to calculate it using the following table” and list the unweighted GPA using it. I don’t think you would need to explain it further in the additional info.

A couple questions:

Who else here is going to forward their QB application to a school for Early Action consideration, if they are a Finalist but not Matched? I’m doing MIT EA. When I forward the app on December 1st, I don’t have to include additional materials do I? Since they will already have the QB app, teacher recs, transcript, test scores, as well as additional materials (CSS Profile, official reports, citizenship documents) that I will have sent by November 2nd. Can someone confirm all this? Thanks!

My teachers would not have to write/mail additional recs to colleges that I forward the QB app to right? Only to the other schools in Regular Decision that I did not include for Match (Harvard, for example).

What 2blue said about updating previous information upon further consideration. Do the best you can as soon as you can, and that should be fine.

@Youdon’tsay:

I don’t think we think the QuestBridge methodology for calculating grade averages fits our situation either, but we will just deal with it and count on the selection committee looking at what the specific courses are.

Good luck to everyone applying. I suppose many of you will have a busy weekend.

TA, it’s to our advantage to use the QB calculation, so we will, but I just don’t want the discrepancy to raise red flags. I’m sure he’ll be able to work it into the 300-word thing.

Have you seen the school profile, YDS? Our school has a very clear explanation as to how GPA is computed. Unless your school has a really high cut-off for As, like 95 and above, it seems it would be hard to get that much lower than the QB table. I wonder if there is an “official” way they calculate unweighted GPA or if the guidance counselor is coming up with it on his or her own since it sounds like it is out of the ordinary for this school to report unweighted GPA. I do think the most important thing is that they will see the exact courses he has taken and grades received.

hey guys-- did it take longer than 48 hours for any of your faxes to process?
my counselor put our school cover sheet above the QB one and I’m worried it won’t get processed =/

The profile doesn’t address methodology. Here’s what they do:

100 = 4.0
99 = 3.9
98 = 3.8 etc.

So a 94 is a 3.4 whereas on the QB formula it’s 4.0. After a while, it’s a big difference.
