National Merit Cutoff Predictions Class of 2017

@Mamelot I thought this it was already a well known fact that the table in the Understanding Your Scores is a nationally represented research sample. I DM’d CB on Twitter regarding the tweet and they responded “IT was a research study sample of U.S. students weighted to represent all U.S. students in that grade, regardless of it they normally take the PSAT.”

If we assume that the the reading and writing along with the math percentiles are collect since they are from user national group which is considered valid. If you calculate the 98.9 and 99.7 percentiles +2sd, +3sd you will see that the math would be 724-727 for +2sd and ~770 for +3sd, for English it would be 725-728 and ~770, for +2sd and +3sd. If you look at the charts, math is in the 98% range and reading and writing is in the 99/99+ range for the +2sd values, which means more students did better in math than the norm predicted and less students did better than predicted in R&W since SI is based on 2x R&W I think the SI might not be that far off. Yes I am an optimist but I am trying to see what data is the most useable and make a hypothesis. anyone else agree with this logic or am I making a bad assumption?

@PicoLA Thank you for your support. I don’t believe it will matter to NMSC what subscores are behind each student’s SI.

@AnnMarie74. I agree, though it seems a bit odd that CB provides section to section SI concordance tables but not a composite SI to SI concordance table for 2014/2015.

@Jay12321, I think this info is new to most people here. We knew it was based on a research sample, but not on the “National” numbers. Some people suspected that but never was confirmed.

Question…Is testmasters located in Texas? Do you have any idea when the updated cutoff will be posted? And how comfortable do you feel about the new cutoff? If my son looks good with the cutoff then he will need prep classes to confirm his score for the finals…correct? Just trying to be proactive rather than reactive about all this.

TLT,

Test Masters‘ Main Office is in Houston, TX, although we do run courses nationally. We’ve said a couple of times that this update will be posted soon… and it should be available soon; we just want to make sure our numbers are correct before posting. We expect our updated post to be extremely accurate.

To your other question, yes, if your son qualifies as a Semifinalist he will have to take the SAT to advance to Finalist status. Qualifying to compete is automatic, based on your PSAT (really your Selection Index) score, but there are actually a lot of different things that go into your application to advance in the National Merit Scholarship Competition. Factors like your GPA, class schedule, and extracurriculars are all considered. Procedurally, your high school principal or counselor will be notified of your son’s status as a Semifinalist in the fall, and they will be sent an application kit. They should then work with you to fill everything out.

Hope this helps!

I wonder the “extremely accurate” post contains only one state (TX 219) or more states.

Is the extremely accurate data supposed to suggest lower NMSF numbers or higher ones? Hopefully 210 for Kentucky again

@destined4harvard, How many does your school have at 210 or above? More or less than the 6 NMSF you had last year?

17 @ 208+ 13 @ 210+ I’m the only one who got a 210

208 is the lowest 99th percentile we have

@destined4harvard, What SI does your 6th-9th highest have?

@Speedy2019 When did you speak to CB about the state summaries? I can’t wait for that data much longer!

@AZcat1 The reason the name didn’t work for you was because you had a space between the “@” and the name.

@destined4harvard Do I understand you correctly? Please confirm

17- 208-109. You 210. 13 with 211 and higher.

@destined4harvard .Sorry typo 208-209

@destined4harvard Or just your whole top 12 who are above 210?

3 scored 208, I scored a 210, 13 scored above me @SLparent

214-215 is 6th to 9th @VandyAlum93

But my GC says he’s expecting 209-210 to be the cutoff so idk
