National Merit Cutoff Predictions Class of 2017

@srk2017, number 888 is the minimum. If it is 220, by this time we can id or hear 1520 or 227-228 everywhere and every HS.One article written by Scott Clyburn (1/15/2015), he has observed Normal Distribution for PSAT, it happens every year

In California, and from 2013-2014 Annual Report by NMSC

  • Top 5% make it to Commended, and top 1.15% make it to NMSF. They spreaded from SI 223 to SI 240
_ So how is the score spreaded by this year?

One more educational consultant’s estimate for IL SF cutoff at a hopeful SI “209”. I suppose he hasn’t seen anecdotal data yet! Although he does provide a possible range of 212 - 220, but goes ahead and picks a number lower than minimum range!

@OHToCollege “The Big Three” give the following predictions for Illinois:

Testmasters: 215
Prepscholar: 216
Compass: 218

Mr. Kim’s prediction of 209 looks awfully optimistic. If you take the midpoint of his selected range, it looks like the prognosticators’ number for Illinois is 216. We’ll know better, though, once the Commended score is out. [-O<

Any ideas on Missouri cut-off?

@3589Annabel FWIW – here’s the NMSF cutoff predictions from “The Big Three” for Missouri:

Testmasters: 213
Prepscholar: 215
Compass: 212

@thinmints and other VA folks. While we’re at it, here are the The Big Three predictions for Virginia:

Testmasters: 218
Prepscholar: 217
Compass: 219

@VABogart --many thanks!!! We are both in with these numbers…right? Stay home/safe/dry tonight…bad storms on the East Coast!

@thinmints Yes, my S’s SI is 218. He’s interested in engineering school (Virginia Tech, Texas A&M) but he’s also interested in living in Florida. (And the University of Central Florida gives an all-inclusive free ride for NMFs – may be hard to pass up.)

About an hour ago, we had buckets of rain (some hail also), high winds, and fierce thunder/lightning – strange weather for February. Thankful that the power stayed on. Hope you’re managing OK also!

IL cut off???
From
http://morethansat.com/2016/02/16/we-received-the-psat-score-what-does-that-mean-and-what-do-we-do-now-part-2/

“With a shift of 12 points on the new scale, we can reasonably estimate that Illinois’s cutoff Selection Index for the class of 2017 could be anywhere between 201 to 205 (203, give or take 2 points).”

and
“Our best guess at this point is that the cutoff will be somewhere between 212 and 220.”

and conclusion
“For the sake of our students, we hope that the actual Selection Index score for Illinois students will be closer to 203 rather than 212 to 220 range”

@dallaspiano See messages #3342 and #3343.

@VABogart – we are having terrible weather in NY too - so far no damage or loss of electricity. I think in FL - that Gainesville has strong engineering programs - are you looking there too?

Thanks!

@VAbogart my D2 (D3’s older sister) and I are actually headed out to UCF tomorrow evening! She was accepted last fall and is checking out the School of Visual Art and Design on Friday. I’ll let you know what I think, although we aren’t touring anything engineering-related.

D3 continues to get HEAVY recruitment from UCF due to her PSAT score which we consider to be a good sign. I’ve let the girls know that they can BOTH attend UCF if they want to. D2 has a Knight’s Achievement scholarship from them - we are OOS but the total cost of her attending would be about what it would cost to attend our in-state flagship. They are very generous with scholarship money.

Thank @VABogart,
I did see those msg. Sometime it takes a while to understand what Mr. Kim really meant

@CA1543 Yes, we’ll be touring the University of Florida and the University of Central Florida during our Spring Break in Orlando. My S is looking at Mechanical Engineering, with a chance to take some Aerospace electives.

@Mamelot Hope your tour of UCF goes well. Would be interested to hear your impressions. I used to live in Altamonte Springs, FL, about 20 minutes from UCF, but that was 20 years ago. If my S doesn’t make NMF, maybe he can get a Pegasus scholarship from UCF – that would still make it cheaper than Virginia Tech, though I think we could afford either one. I spoke with a Floridian yesterday who refers to UCF as “Under Construction Forever,” though his son went there and liked it very much.

From state reoprt http://research.collegeboard.org/programs/psat/data/cb-jr for 2014-2015
DC and NJ were considered to have higher-up cut off
But state reports showed both DC and NJ had lower Mean, lower SD compared to National. Why?
So NMF qualifiers in both DC and NJ just had to be very top end scorers

DC is also one of the few “states” that has virtually everyone take the SAT, and possibly PSAT as well. This tends to lower the means. MD also has a disproportionate cut compared to average scores.

http://blog.prepscholar.com/average-sat-scores-by-state-most-recent

In DC you have a bunch of poor low performing public school kids and some exclusive private school kids competing against one another. So you can have a low mean but a high cutoff. The testmasters Texas data (presumably from Houston) shows the same sort of thing.

This is why it’s hard to use the mean to determine cutoffs - the correlation between them is tenuous at best.

DC and NJ have great disparity between the top prep schools and the average public schools. There are enough high scorers in the top schools to keep the NMSF cutoff high while a large percentage of students are not even college ready.
