National Merit Cutoff Predictions Class of 2017

DD got the OU email today as well as a few others that are good NMF schools that have started in the last few days.

218 in NC

My S got an email today from OU today
Texas 221

Says Congratulations on your incredible PSAT score.

He got an email from Texas A&M awhile back. Texas A&M email mentioned being on the track for National Merit Finalist. Not sure how they know that for sure. I sure HOPE they are correct though!!!

We got the OU email. 216 in Iowa

No OU in IL with 217

D got it in IL with 223.

nvm

DD who scored a 219, with a perfect 38 Writing and 37 CR score, got a letter from Yale that specifically mentioned her CR and Writing skills.

About letters sent to your kids, this was addressed 2 years ago

We got the Yale letter (and Columbia, Dartmouth, Brown) but my DD had a 194 PSAT!
I am convinced that they send them so you think you have a shot and apply, but they just want more applicants so their % of admits is lower.”

I know a person who ended up Commended rather than NMSF who got tons of this mail and really let it sway their college choices. She got letters, book, t-shirts and special invites to regional presentations from Ivys, U of Chicago, etc. She applied to a couple of state schools (the kind almost anyone can get into) and then a number of major reach schools. She ended up very unhappy at the state college. Take it all with a grain of salt!"

If your SI 214 or greater, very good chance

D3 got all these letters and e-mails so far, but we also know someone in IL who was a point or two below the cut-off (and knew it well before NMSF’s were announced) who got the same. Universities don’t have proprietary information on cut-offs - they just make good guesses (and of course a very high PSAT score is an attractive applicant as it typically means very high SAT/ACT’s as well).

@HalfMoon22
What state are you in?

@Tgirlfriend - WI

@HalfMoon22
I am going to trying to keep a spreadsheet on these. Thank you

We didn’t get any (CA with 220), but my S opted not to receive any material after getting too many last year with not so great score. As someone said pure marketing ploy to increase their application pool and tout their low acceptance rate. Education institutions are no different from any other business now a days!

@srk2017
I agree they are trying to get their name out there for students to look at. I heard they purchase lists from CB within the range they THINK might be NMSF. Can’t blame them for promoting their colleges. Yes, if your student did not want emails sent then I don’t think your S will get any emails.

Anything is possible "that’s they purchase lists from CB within the range "
With CB budget of $168,027,221 (2013-2014), I wonder if CB really sell email list for extra $

@dallaspiano
it’s all about the MONEY!!! Can’t blame them it they do.

oh, they do all right:

I can’t find it now, but I remember a link that said they could provide names by selection index percentile while we were trying to do the same here. I got a little irritated and went back to lurker mode on this thread.

I will be happy to pay them $50 (small price) to know if I am in circle NMF of TX state. Then 16000 NMSF potential means $800.000 - mucho dinero
Small price to pay after guess-estimating since Jan 07.

Tried to edit the post above, but here is a data sheet:

I want to pay to know. Too much headache after 53 days
