National Merit Cutoff Predictions Class of 2017

@hm1101 CB definitely represents that the PSAT is supposed to be a good predictor of how you’d do on the SAT had you taken it that day. I know that my D3 was hitting practice SAT scores that were very similar to her PSAT from October, but I really hope she scored higher on the real deal in March, given that she did do some prep for it.

feel the same.Son did great on psat.Felt he did great on Sat.We will see in May.You know they have to have all data in by now,why do they make us wait so excruciatingly long?lol!Either way,he is very responsible and self motivated,so at least it has been a fun process for us,his parents.Not sure what to do as far as college apps. yet.

One thing that bothered me the most about the PSAT is that strong math students don’t do well. I scored a 750 on the math section and a 640 (yah I know I suck) on the reading with a total of 1390 with SI of 203 while someone with a 750 on reading and a 640 on math would have a much better SI.

yes,I agree it is unfair to great math students.my son had a 760 on math and a 720 on reading and writing.He is usually very strong on that as at barely fifteen he got a 780 on critical reading on the old sat.He said some of the questions or problems were poorly worded.Who knows?It is what it is though.

My S is in the same boat math vs. reading on the PSAT. Ugh Frederick Douglass passage!

Dudes, you do realize that the NMSQT has ALWAYS weighed the PSAT math at 1/3 the total score? Nothing has actually changed there.

we are talking about how it affects the index,not the composite score.

Which as mamelot points out is unchanged. The selection index was always 1/3 writing 1/3 reading 1/3 math.

Second try - Two questions. 1. On what day is the commended score believed to be coming out? 2. Can a Hispanic student be a national merit finalist and get NHRP recognition or only get one?

@destined4harvard

You can get both honors.

I think commended status is usually deduced (not officially announced) in April when NM contacts high schools to verify that specific students qualify. I believe this verification includes all commended and NMSF. In September the NMSF are announced.

If I do make NMSF (my SI is 215 and I live in Texas, so maybe it’s possible?), can I use my old SAT score to qualify for NMF? I haven’t taken the new SAT nor do I plan to because I took the old SAT and got a 2290.

@neoking

Excellent score! and yes you can use it as confirmation for nmsf.

right you are.

@nw2this Thanks for the info! I hope I get nmsf!

@neoking , when did you take the old SAT? There is a window for when you can take it. It can’t be too terribly early. My son’s year (class of 2015) the range was October 2012 and December 2014, which if unchanged would translate to October 2014 to December 2016.

I have a 216 in NC and that seems RIGHT on the border.
Here’s the cutoffs
Compass- 216
Prepscholar- 215
Testmasters- 215

i think you will make it but it all depends on the scores for the other High School juniors in the state. My bet is it will be between 210-215.

There was another post in this forum that indicated that the commended cutoff would come out in April. The students won’t know whether the are commended or semi-finalist until September which the Semi-finalist cutoffs are announced

@PAMom21 I took it in October, 2015, so it looks like I’m fine. I didn’t know that though… thank you!
