@PAMom21 Yes, I did receive your reply – thanks so much! Yes, August is toasty, but worth getting fried.
FWIW – I went to seminary in Orlando (RTS – Orlando) which is a seven-minute drive from UCF, so I’m partial to the Orlando area. (I lived in Altamonte Springs.) My sister-in-law also runs an organic grocery in Orlando/Winter Park, so S would have relatives there, too.
OK, dopey question, PAMom21 – how do I reply and/or send private messages? I would like to be able to respond to your nice note (and those of others) but have been stymied on how to send a private message. Apologies for my lack of technical skill. Thanks!
Hmm, there isn’t a blank text block right below the message, just like there is here on the regular board?
@PAMom21 I think this is what you need. Click on their name…then you will have two boxes to choose from…pick message.
@VABogart I have lived in florida all my life.Born and raised in Tampa. The temp.goes up the farther down you go in florida, rule of thumb, but you would be inland and midway up the state at UCF where the avg. temp is two to three degrees cooler than where I am in S.W. florida on the coast. The flora and fauna differ from the south of florida.Lots more grand champion oaks hundreds of years old, more hills. Then of course, you are never too far away from the nearest beach.
I finally just looked at my S’s missed questions. I know I am late to the party. He missed 1 on Reading got 38…missed 1 on writing and language got a 37 and missed 7 on the Math and got a 35.5 for a total SI score of 221. The odd thing to me is he is WAY better at Math than reading or writing. ACT 34 on reading…36 on math. Kind of weird don’t you think? While looking at the Math PSAT it seems that most of the questions missed are marked SCI. That might explain his missing on the Math part of the PSAT…it’s not all Math.
@Tgirlfriend what does “SCI” mean?
SCI is listed as a “cross test” score, and is defined as “analysis in science”. I worked through the PSAT myself, and knowing some of the science before hand would make for easier and faster responses, but you really don’t need the science foundation. All of the necessary information is given in the problem.
SCI means “Analysis in Science”. There are a lot of cross-over scores and subscores on this test. Theoretically that should help you figure out exactly where your student needs to focus. in D3’s case she’d miss the same number in each sub section. A very balanced student overall LOL
It’s 23 degrees here in MN so I"M thinking of moving to FL. Problem is when my D2 and I visited UCF in late Feb. it was in the low 70’s - both in Orlando AND in Minneapolis.
I’ve been in Orlando during summer and the word “steamy” comes to mind. Then one year we were there over Christmas break and the temps got down to the high 30’s. Brrrr. I hadn’t brought my winter coat so was a bit chilled that year. Central Florida can be all over the place but the temps are not as extreme as they are here in MN. The difference is that it can become unusually cold when you don’t expect it to.
@ snicks1234 I lived in Central Florida (Altamonte Springs) for two years, and never got so much as a sniffle or sneeze the whole time there. Having your health year-round is wonderful. We went to Clearwater Beach two summers ago – absolutely the best beach in the country! So S wanting to go to UCF is an easy sell for me.
@Mamelot Orlando may get hot but I found your blood does thin out. Ever since moving from Florida, I’ve never been able to take the cold as well as I used to. I have great respect for you enduring the elements in MN (although it’s beautiful up there.)
@VABogart yes,the weather is easy to get used to and it begs you to be outdoors.Fishing, swimming, lying in the sun.Clearwater beach was my everyday hangout on weekends from my late teens up and I’m 61 now.SurfSide!Lol!It is a big draw for kids.A little farther down the state in sarasota is crescent beach,a beautiful super long beach ,very wide also and amelia Island. Not t mention the Atlantic side beaches.
My January predictions don’t seem too crazy now that we know commended is 209.

I’ll play. Will just do a few predictions as you’ll be able to fill in the rest. These will seem high.
New Jersey and D.C. 225
Massachusetts 224
California 223
Maryland 221
Texas 220
Georgia 219
New York 220
Minnesota 217
North Dakota 210
That is all. Hope I’m wrong. Will be fun to revisit this in September to see who came up with the best predictions
Also,spring break,beaches are packed.No place to park.This time of year,I just go golfing.lol
Snicks, you just reminded me. Time to go watch The Masters. ~O)
Okay, just got the letter from Nsmc telling us that our son is commended. He is in an online high school but They still consider him a florida homeschooled child.Definitely 209.The minute we get anything on the semifinalist or cutoffs, not sure if they even notify us,I will post it.
@snicks1234 I’m a homeschooling parent who also received the letter today. We’ll be notified in September if our student advances.
The anticipation is too great.lol!Surely they must know that. Why such a long wait?
@snicks1234 Thank you for the update and congratulations!!! I text our Principal yesterday and told him to keep an eye out for the letter. I think our principal maybe more excited than we are about my S getting commended and moving on toward NMSF. He has personally known my S since he was a toddler. He asked my S if he would ask for him to present him with his diploma on graduation day. My S is currently #1 in his class. It made my S feel super special.
Good luck to everyone waiting! I know it was stressful for me this year.
Although, I think it probably helped that two days before letters were sent out, I got a concussion. I’m pretty sure I still had that concussed look when my counselor told me.
Congrats to you amd your son.
