@paveyourpath Absolutely correct. That is why I wanted to quickly get back on topic. God loves all these children and we are supposed to also. I would be crushed if I thought had hurt one feeling. It is primarily why I don’t discuss politics.lol! I wish everyone of these deserving children were recognized. They are all awesome. When you’re talking of a matter of a couple points it’s really hard.
@snicks1234 We are also in Florida. Because the IB program at ds high school is new, there isn’t really any historical data to draw upon. In the top 10 students, 1 declined to answer so probably scored well, #2 scored 216 #3 scored 216 #4 scored 218. The only other score over 215 was a 218 scored by a student with lower grades but who tests exceptionally well.
@snicks1234 The National Achievement Program was discontinued so African-Americans need to get the same score as non-Hispanics to receive any recognition. As far as the Hispanic Program, many schools don’t offer the same level of scholarships for NHRP.
@itsgettingreal17 Well, recognition to any child for any good reason is a good thing. I definitely applaud any organizations efforts to do so. That’s why I give college board and NMSc the benefit of the doubt in all this. I feel they give an opportunity to children to be recognized for academics. It is definitely getting better, but for so long they have been overlooked. Bravo to them and the children.
Also I have learned a lot about the challenges of different states and districts. Coming on here has been an education.Thank you.
Back to fretting.lol! Someone posted in another thread that floridas Smf cutoff was typically 10-12 points over commended cutoff. That would put florida at 219. That would be a shocker, but then so was 209 for commended. At least for me it was. Or maybe it just blew away my wishful thinking.
Since my kid does not look stereotypically Hispanic, the school did make her jump thru some hoops to get the form signed.
Okay…our Principal is getting nervous because he has not gotten the letter from NM about my S being commended. Has anyone else in the public school gotten it?
@Tgirlfriend still haven’t heard anything about commended with a 213 at a public school in Mississippi. I think we just need to wait a bit.
Florida is usually 10-12 points higher but that was when the test was out of 240. The spread at the top is much tighter this year.
@nw2this my sons grandmother is half hispanic, half italian. His mother a quarter each. He could pass for eithervreally. My goodness, what kind of hoops? Did it affect your son negatively?
I think homeschoolers might get letters first.
Sorry @nw2this . I mean your daughter.
@delilahxc . Please explain that to my simple mind. If the score groupings are tighter at the top wouldn’t that drive cutoffs higher? Or does that mean at a certain point there’s a quick dropoff? Does it mean with an inordinate amount of children in those extremely high scores take the cutoffs up to the extreme? Help me here.
@Tgirlfriend S’s guidance counselor confirmed today that he was on the list that the principal received that names the commended students. Not as many commended kids as in past years, interestingly.
Pardon my typing. One finger.lol
The higher scores seem to be very clumped around the 216-218 range. I’ve heard of very few scores in Florida 220 or over and Florida produces a lot of NMSF. But to put it another way, DC is usually 20+ points over the commended score and that simply isn’t possible this year. So things that were true in the past are less so this year. There is less space to move between 209 and 228.
I really, really do think your child is safe.
I wish I could say the same about mine
I also heard lot of scores in 216-218 range in CA.
I think the new test has definitely shrunk the range of scores at the high end. The old test had a range of 20+ points differential between the cutoffs of the highest and lowest states. Now, it looks as if the distribution will be much tighter. Perhaps only 10-12 or so points difference between highest and lowest states. The delta was always a huge sticking point for people criticizing the NM program - the “unfairness” of the different cutoffs. Looks like CB may have tried (and succeeded) in shrinking the delta. I guess we’ll see in September.
@Felicita …What state are you in? We are in Texas with a 221 and still waiting. I knew that home school got theirs first I am not worried however our Principal stopped me at the School Board meeting and said “I still haven’t gotten a letter”. I told him he would and just to be patient. Now when it comes to NMSF he maybe having to tell me that. lol
