@delilahxc Thanks for the explanation. Very clear. Makes sense. That does leave some hope then for the 214-215 range.
@delilahxc I sincerely hope your child makes it. Well,I wonder if national merit reads this thread and giggles at our hand wringing.lol! I would hope not.
@snicks1234 - itâs a private school in Broward.
I guess my only point is that itâs left at the local level to determine Hispanic status. It might be impractical to try and verify everyone at the national level. The NHRP board may just be 1 person with an assistant.
My daughterâs school in NY announced the commended students over the morning announcements today. There are 9 of them. I think there were 5 last year, with one finalist in the end.
@mageecrew How would the school know yet if (and I could be wrong) if the commended PSAT indexes are being released later this year from collegeboard? Sorry, I might have bad info, though.
@mageecrew âŠCongratulations to those who got commended. Do you know how many semifinalists you had last year? We are in Texas so I hope that our mail arrives soon.
Oh, I see now. Commended is in April. Sorry for the confusion, aha.
Pretty suprised to learn that only 5 juniors in ddâs high school made the commended cut. Not sure how many normally make it but this is a large suburban school with a pretty good academic reputation. Minnesota.
@smilingalong CB does not release NM scores. NMSC does. People called NMSC and NMSC confirmed Commended score this year is 209 a few days ago.
NMSF status will be known in September.
@smilingalong From reading other posts here, it sounds as though the cutoff to reach the commended level has recently been released, and itâs 209. I donât know if I am using the lingo exactly right here, but the students who at least made the commended cutoff are being notified now. Well, at least my daughterâs school was notified before us⊠we havenât receive anything in the mail yet at home. If I am understanding it right, we wonât hear who is going to the next level (Semi-finalist) until the fall.
Edit - whoops I just saw your reply a little late!
@Tgirlfriend We had just one semifinalist last year, and I think that is about normal for us, one or two a year. But I have a feeling there will be more this year. My daughter said there are at least 4 of them who scored 1450 or higher. She doesnât know their SI scores though.
@mnpapa29 do you know how many SFâs at the school last year? Also do you have any idea where your daughterâs SI falls among those five who made the cut?
I would honestly be shocked if DC/NJ is higher than 220. I go to the top school in DC that normally has 5-10 semifinalists. Top score was a 222 and only one person scored that. Only 2 got 221.
Well that is good to hear @bubama. Was this just from word of mouth or has the guidance counselor mentioned there were less top scorers in your school?
@bubama I think Testmasters may be the closest in estimating state cutoffs. Testmasters uses 2015 scores as the âoldâ cutoff while Prepscholar uses 2014 scores. I think, though, that it would be more accurate if these sites used a moving 5-year average as the âold cutoffâ since the scores, on a year-to-year basis, can vary significantly.
For those thinking that a 209 Commended might vault their stateâs cutoff beyond their score, just keep in mind that the compression increases with each number you move up. So itâs definitely possible that the highest stateâs cutoff (DC, New Jersey, Overseas) may be 220, CA and MA at 219, TX at 218, and so forth. Only wild card is the âclumpingâ of scores that appears to occur at 214, 216, and 218, which could lead to a stateâs cutoff falling on the next odd number up (i.e., 215, 217, and 219).
@nw2this my sonâs school didnât realize he was hispanic either. When he emailed GC to ask if he could drop off the form she said she wanted to meet in person. She handled it well and conversationally mentioned she didnât know he was hispanic. Theyâve had many college planning meetings and itâs a small school. Sheâs also discussed on a couple of occasions what the process would be for him as a NMSF but because she didnât realize he was hispanic never thought to mention NHRP.
Just curious whether the letters being sent to principals and homeschoolers states the commended is 209. I have no reason to doubt it isnât based on all the confirmations from postersâ phone calls to NMSC but has anything official been released? Also, my Dâs been getting the usual college flyers, but now colleges are calling the house asking to speak to her. Since she checked the box not to have her name released on the PSAT, I asked the caller why she was being called. She said it was b/c of her SAT. As far as I am aware she did not list a phone number on the SAT but maybe CB has it and sold it? Anyone else getting phone calls? I guess Iâm new to thisâŠ
@pickman call you childâs guidance counselor to confirm your kid is âon the listâ for national merit commmended and everything is in order. Thatâs what I did. Only GCs get noticed this round and are responsible for making sure students are eligible. Donât leave it to chance.
@Pickmen yep.Homeschooler.Got the letter.Itâs 209 for sure.
