National Merit Cutoff Predictions Class of 2017

@snicks1234 Thanks for the notice. http://www.■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■/national-merit-semifinalist-cutoffs/
He says to look more at the ranges than individual projected scores. He matched Testmasters revised 219 for Texas and seems many of his projections are now higher than Testmasters: http://collegeadmissions.testmasters.com/update-psat-scores-cut-national-merit-2016/ Wonder if Testmasters will update theirs based on commended cut off at 209. We are hanging on by a thread to our 218 in NY!

Testmasters indicated that they will not be updating any more.

@CA1543 - hanging on a thread here too in VA with a 220. Its going to be a long wait!

Just wondering how accurate, historically, these predictors have been. I know with all the changes, there really is no way to tell, but how accurate is Compass Prep usually. Anyone know?

Good luck @thinmints – just makes me wish we had spent a bit of time prepping but he was focused on the October ACT – and thankfully got that done well so guess it made sense. The NMSF status would be nice but we can live fine without it - just amazed the scale changed so much (with top shifting down from 240 to 228) and some of the higher scoring states will likely not come down much if at all. I wonder if the tight band will also mean less broad participation in some states & more concentration in the higher performing schools.

@disshar even if CompassPrep or Testmasters had been accurate historically, it’s a whole new ball game now. Big difference between the first year of a totally revised test and the nth year of a well-established test.

At least with having the Commended data point the revised predictions should be more accurate than the earlier predictions.

What’s the highest selection index score someone can get?

228

Our school announced the names of students with
"…juniors who have qualified for consideration in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship competition. Qualifying for this competition is based on PSAT scores from the fall of 2016. Congratulations to the following students: "
They used to announce only the Semifinalists in the past.
I don’t know if this year’s notice from NMSC was different or what.
They now should only know about Commended status.

@ payn4ward Any score reports of said students? What state?

@snicks1234 Some of them have scores much below the testmasters’ predictions in Colorado. Although a few will become semifinalists, I’m pretty sure the school just received Commended notifications. Maybe it was worded differently confusing GCs,

Here’s a response I received from Art at Compass concerning his thoughts on the impact of the 209 commended cutoff on his earlier California estimate range of 218-221:

“We now expect California to fall in the 219 to 222 range. I no longer think that it can go as low as 218. I consider 222 very unlikely on the high side, but I did not feel that I could completely exclude it from the range. I’ll have more details on the methodology later this week.”

Keeping my fingers’ crossed for my DD’s 221 . . . .

Interestingly, Art of Compass kept Virginia at 217-221 with an estimate at 219. That should be encouragement for those concerned of NMSF “creep.”

I got a 213 in Ohio. What do you think my chances are? Ohio was at a 215 last year and a 213 the year before. Is it predicted that the National Merit cutoff will go up or down?

@gn4672 Art at compass prep is predicting a 217 for Ohio, but keep in mind that that is just a projection. It could go either way. They are, however, expecting cutoffs to rise for middle states.

I got an email from my online high school back in February stating that I place in the top 50k students and listing all steps that would need to be followed if I am chosen as a semifinalist or finalist, and that because I am an online student I am considered home-schooled, and would be contacted by the NMSC directly at my home mailing address that I listed on the test form. I haven’t received anything and wasn’t expecting to until September. After reading this though, should I expect something?

@Willis1313 – Congratulations on this honor. If you become a NMSF you will be notified in September. Then you would need to take the steps you have apparently already received notice about. Good luck to you!

@Willis1313 do you mind if I ask you what state and SI score you have?
