National Merit Cutoff Predictions Class of 2017

@itsgettingreal17 …I sure hope you are right. My S did a 1480 on the new SAT so we are hoping that will be good enough to confirm the NMSF if the 221 makes the cut. September can NOT get here fast enough. Ugh

@Tgirlfriend 1480 is enough to confirm. I have no doubt of that. And I sure hope 221 makes the cut in TX, because if it doesn’t, then 223 won’t make the cut in DC. And if 223 doesn’t make the cut in DC, well that’s just crazy!

@candjsdad I agree!!! That would be super crazy. I just keep seeing things about inflated tables and that makes me worry.

@Tgirlfriend I’m worried too about NMSF after seeing the crazy in the SAT numbers. (More worried that the PSAT cutoff will be crazy high after seeing the weird concordance numbers.)

Definitely agree re 1480. Congrats to your son. That’s a great score! Will be much higher than confirming score.

@itsgettingreal17 Thank you. He is just ready to be done with standardized testing and move on the college applications.

My son scored a 1480 on the PSAT and 1460 on the new SAT. He did not prep at all for the new SAT (he has a 35 ACT) and had prepped a bit for the PSAT. He was surprised his SAT score wasn’t higher, since he left that testing feeling really good and had plenty of time to answer the questions… so the questions managed to trip him up. Again, all he took it for was NMS confirming score - lets hope he needs it! He has a 221 - needs to make the NJ cutoff! Getting NMS would make our life so much easier this fall since he really likes one of the schools offering a very large scholarship.

CB was supposed to publish the new concordance tables for PSAT in “May”. No word on that?

I just recently checked the CB site - still says revised tables will come out in May - well they have 20 days left I suppose – that will be something to see! @suzyQ7 congrats on you son’s ACT score. Mine got a 35 too but won’t take the SAT unless he makes NMSF - on the cusp most likely in NY - but may be short a point.

@suzyQ7 – our experience was almost identical to yours. DD got a 1480 on PSAT (220SI) and a 1460 on the March SAT…34 on ACT (she was very sick that day). She took the SAT only for confirming purposes if needed. We will only send the ACT score to colleges.

Never mind, question answered by another post.

@suzyQ7 I completely understand where you are coming from. NMF would make a huge difference for our family also. What colleges is your S looking at? We have about 6 on our list. Needless to say I like the ones closer to us. lol

@Tgirlfriend, can you share your list? I too am in Texas and learning from this thread for future use. It will be a merit only chase. Auto merit at that.

Please humor me here, I am new, but have learned so much this trip thanks to all of you. My question is, what will the new Psat concordance tables reveal about state cutoffs,if anything?

@snicks1234 Nothing :frowning:

@snicks1234 If we had accurate concordance tables we could know within a very small margin of error that the same number of people who scored a 225 or above last year scored a 222 or above this year, and so on down the list. We could easily compare last years scores to this years scores. We can’t do that with the inaccurate concordance tables they have released.

Any ideas on if a 1460 new SAT would equate to NMSF for PSAT, NMF for PSAT/SAT in New Mexico? I haven’t taken the PSAT yet as I’m a freshman, but if it seems likely that I would become NMF if I take the PSAT this fall, I might skip sophomore year (I’m homeschooled FWIW).

@CharlotteLetter You could estimate your PSAT by adding your Reading/Writing score to the 1460 total and dividing by 10.

@BunnyBlue I’m confused - That would be the SI, right? So 214 (760M, 690ERW)… I guess it’d be just barely enough for NMSF in NM (maybe), but what about a score around 1460 as the SAT score for NMF?

@CharlotteLetter Oh, I’m sorry. I just realized what you really meant. You were speculating about, if you got a high enough PSAT score for semifinalist, whether the 1460 would be high enough for the SAT confirmation score to advance to finalist. I would bet yes, but that is just a guess based on the old confirmation requirement and the concordance tables.

@VANURSEPRAC I completely understand. Currently we are looking at OU…Texas Tech…UNT…OSU(Oklahoma State)…Texas A&M…Alabama(last because of location only). I think OU is highest on his list then Texas Tech…right now at least.
