National Merit Cutoff Predictions Class of 2017

Thanks @Mamelot . Appreciate it.

@Tgirlfriend we have no new information so, unfortunately, we will all have to wait until September.

Just wondering if any of your schools made an official announcement of Commended students. School is out for the summer and we heard nothing. Last years announcement was in mid May.

not ours! radio silence!

Our school called the kids in for a meeting before school one day. Told them they would at least be commended and talked to them about the process.

@saillakeerie – how nice and civil!! I think knowing this also helps student get some sense of what NM is, whether to try the SAT or not and to feel good about being recognized! Is it still not 100% official until September though??

What does being a national merit scholar even mean??

@Madgie My son’s school did not make any announcement on commended. 3 more months.

@junior2017 to my dd16 it means $124K scholarship to her first choice school plus many other perks like priority registration. Any NMF that accepts any NM scholarship is a National Merit Scholar.

We didn’t get an official announcement, but my vice principal came in to congratulate me on my score, so I took that as a notification that I had reached the commended step.

Being a commended student is about the cutoff though, which is 209. As long as you have that SI or higher, you can know that you are at least commended. From there, it will depend on your state.

Also, if there was any confusion about the cutoff, I can confirm that it is 209 because, as a homeschooled student, I got mail directly from the NMSC.

My son also recieved that confirmation as he is considered homeschooled. Would we then also recieve confirmation of Nmsf at home? If we do I will definitely post it.

Or would that be a violation of their rules, heaven forbid?

Historically, the commended cutoff is the same for everyone: home schooled and traditional schools. Is this right?

That’s my understanding - one scored universally for commended.

@snicks1234 from what I’ve read on these threads the homeschool families are crucial to determining the cut-off by state. They are usually the first to get any definitive information. Not everyone’s school principal posts on CC!

That’s my understanding as well. We are counting on the homeschool families and the cc parent who has a child that is notified in school. My first time at this but based on what everyone has said the cutoffs will be woven together state by state until all states are reported.

@Mamelot Gotcha :wink:

Does anyone have any actual school data for Florida?? Her high school hasn’t given out any information. Kind of nervous cutoff will jump to 217. My D is holding on to an SI of 216 and would be extremely disappointed if she missed it by 1 point!!

No one knows cutoff scores for any state yet - it’s all conjecture at this point. We won’t know until September. Crossing my finger with you; in any case 216 is an SI to be proud of!
