National Merit Cutoff Predictions Class of 2017

Just wonder - has anyone seen or heard about the state PSAT reports coming out? Any further SI cut off predictions?

They are coming out in the fall so totally useless for our purposes.

State summary reports not yet available. Thought they were supposed to be released late August (from someone way back in the thread who communicated with CB)? Seems like years ago . . .

Hello all. I have been following this thread for months. Great group and discussion. I appreciate the insight I have gained. Forgive me as I am sure this info is somewhere in the thread, but I am looking for the approximate week that NMSF notification will go out. I have a S with SI 210 in Florida - so that will be Commended from what I gather. He is starting college applications and is encouraged by his school to have in-state apps submitted by early Sept. If/when he gets Commended status he would definitely like to include this in his apps. Just wondering how long before he can officially know and then include and hit submit. thank you.

He is already commended. Commended is 209

@Boomer14
so you are just wanting a confirmation on the Commended part of the NM? I think I saw someone say that comes out after the NMSF which is USUALLY the first part of September. My S got a letter sent to him from the school telling him that he was moving forward from Commended. Does this help you any?

@Boomer14 - NM has supposedly already sent letters to the schools notifying them of the commended cut-off, so your school should be able to confirm that number for you (209). NM has confirmed it to people over the phone as well, if you wanted to doublecheck. If thats the only thing your app is waiting on, I’d go ahead and add it and fire it off.

The 2016 class heard on September 9 2015 (just looked it up) and I remember D15 heard just after the first week of September, so that’s when the semifinalist notifications start to go out. That is about when CC will start determining the cutoff score by process of elimination. However, what suzyQ7 and Tgirlfriend said is true, you S is commended. And based on Art at Compasses predictions for Florida (214-218 to make NMSF), your S will not advance past commended. Congrats to him and his great PSAT score though!

Thanks everyone. Yes, was just trying to figure out when he would “officially” know he is commended. When those 99% PSAT percentiles came out it was exciting - but glad to know from this forum to taper expectations and now know that he will be commended. We are proud of him. Third of three - older sibs didn’t get this distinction so we are pleasantly surprised. Thank you, again, for responding to my question.

Our year (2014) we heard about NMSF from our school principal on September 3rd. We already knew, based on a home schooling family with a slightly lower score, who received the letter at their house. Official NMSF press release was September 10th. Paperwork notification of commended status was a good 2 weeks after that, but if you are > 209, and not a SF, you are commended.

Technically no one is currently commended. Everyone > 209 has merely moved forward in the competition.

So you’re saying that this year we should definitely know by December 3rd? :stuck_out_tongue:

@thshadow Lol !! I wish they would send a notice to all the school counselors telling them that it is ok to tell the kids right away when they get the notification, that they don’t need to wait until the media release day. All the kids could get an earlier start on their finalist applications.

We are getting closer! We started our wait 8 months ago and now we only have about 6 weeks to go.

@paveyourpath – I agree – though I am both trying to ignore it and focus on other college stuff. I feel like it might not even help my DS much if at all & he really does not want to take the SAT. He may well miss it by 1 point or so. @thshadow — yeah - we’ll probably also need a month of sleuthing, rehashing data & blog posts etc. to sort out he results for various states. No idea why this can’t be more transparent & timely - if there is interest in having more students take the PSAT then more info re commended, NMSF, special cutoffs, scholarships & colleges treatment of NMSF’s etc. would likely benefit many stakeholders.

Well, if CB was in charge then 12/3 would be about correct for a notification date.

But NMSC should have this info. already and unless they have redesigned how to sort an Excel column by Selection Index (highest to lowest) we are probably still looking at early September. One can hope, at any rate.

Out of curiosity, here’s a question for NM veterans. How fast is it to determine cutoffs by state based on information from homeschoolers versus the timeline of press releases?

As a homeschooler myself, I’m certainly looking forward to receiving information a little earlier. It’s crazy how long they make us wait.

@BunnyBlue I totally agree. I even asked our GC about it and she said the principal does exactly what it says. I told her that’s not what it says though and they are allowed to tell the students, just no press releases or announcements. Just another reason I can’t stand this administration.

@disshar Yes, College Board needs to reword their instructions so that they aren’t ambiguous. They should explicitly state that it is all right to notify students right away and allow them to start work on their applications, but that students and their families have to keep the information to themselves until the media announcement day.

I know what you mean about some school administrators not really listening. Sometimes I end up going in to the school a second time and repeating the same information that I gave the previous day. Last time this actually worked. 8-|

I have a 225 on my SI and will likely qualify for national merit right? I have not taken the SAT though since I took the ACT. I kind of want to qualify for NMSF, but if I took the new SAT would I have to take the writing section as in write the essay?

@Illinoisbound - No you would not have to take the essay. I called NMSC about this. My D3 did not sit the essay portion of her March SAT and was very happy about that!
