National Merit Cutoff Predictions Class of 2017

From what I found most (not all) departmental scholarships are in the form of tuition waivers that don’t apply to NM kids. I was actually very vexed that we made a special trip for auditions for the school of music so that she would qualify for a departmental scholarship and then was told since she was NM they would not be giving it to her even though she qualified! It was for one of the few non-tuition waiver scholarships. The department head did contact D an apologize and even tried to find some outside scholarship for her and that meant a lot even though she wasn’t successful.

I’ve heard that after freshmen year there may be more non-tuition waiver departmental scholarships available but even at that it’s not much (couple of hundred to 1K). Thankfully OU does stack outside scholarships and D was fortunate to be awarded several outside freshman scholarship so we have freshmen year 100% covered and some money left over to roll over to next year.

UCF has an excellent NMS package as well, and their GPA requirement is only 3.2. My son had an excellent first year there.

@nw2this The only school on the list that offers NMF $ is BU.

@3scoutsmom

I’m curious about the outside scholarships that you mentioned, if you don’t mind sharing.

@3scoutsmom Thank you for all the OU information! DS was also planning to audition for the music department, so we know now not to expect any additional departmental money if he makes NMF.

On an old thread from last year, OU estimated its OOS out of pocket to be $5,500 for the first year $7,300 for each of the following three years. Even with the 12% increase, that first year estimate is not even close to what you are having to pay. Now I’m wondering about the following three years. If $5500 first year is now $8200, what do you expect for next year (assuming still living in dorm)? Thanks!

any predictions for michigan?

1430 & 210 is my SI … for Michigan. What does this mean?

You will be commended (cutoff is 209). NMSF cutoff predictions for Michigan range from 213-218. So it looks like you will not make SF. 1430/210 are great scores though.

@nw2this she was awarded:
PEC ($2500) local electric company
DSGS ($1250) Girl Scout Service Unit
DSWC ($1000) local woman’s club
AMS ($2500) x 2 American Meteorology Association - 2 years
German ($300) High School German Club
Achievement ($500) High School Scholarship

@rb681000 the new published out of pocket expenses for OU NM are:
Non-Oklahoma Resident:
$7,000 for the first year
$8,800 each year thereafter

This is based on 15 credit hours of the average courses. If you take more hours or courses with more expensive fees it will be higher. My D’s major has slightly above average fees and she plans on taking between 16 and 17 credits a semester so we will have higher than average fees. Here is what we estimate our actual costs to be:

Freshman year fully funded because of $8050 in outside scholarships
Sophomore year $7,900 (because of $4500 outside scholarships)
Junior year $12,400 (plus $$ extra expenses for a semester aboard)

The estimate assumes living in one of the tower dorms in a double, you can save money by living in the honors dorm freshman year and by living off campus after freshman year.

@3scoutsmom …what about for Engineering students that also want to be in the band? What are the honors dorms like? When we took our tour we didn’t get to see the honors dorms. They told us it would be about $32,000 out of pocket for 4 years. That was living on campus first year and off campus the next 3 years. I think that the on campus apartments wouldn’t be bad though. What is your thought?

@Tgirlfriend The honors dorm is Boren with community style bathrooms and about $1k less a year

There are mandatory fees that that are the same for everyone, this year it’s $2117.50 a semester and an “academic excellence” fee $75 per credit hour and technology/program fees based on which college the course is from, engineering courses fees are $56 per credit hour, so a 3 credit engineering class will be $393. You really need to go through and do the math based on your students projected classes and realize that cost will likely increase each year

Sorry I have no information on band.

@3scoutsmom…thank you for all the wonderful information. Yes, I will be looking into this further.

@3scoutsmom Thank you so very much for all of the very specific information you provided. You have been so helpful!

OU was one of our top choices (if he gets NMF) due to the large NMF scholarship package, the fact that they allow you to stack any outside scholarships, and he really likes one of the violin professors there.

We were thinking the total out of pocket would be around 30k, but in reality it looks more like 45k is more accurate. This may be a game changer.

I think the main boast of OU’s scholarship is the five-year tuition waver. If you have any interest in doing graduate school at OU, in the long run, it will be much cheaper to go there. Especially if you come into the school with some dual credit or AP credit taken care of.

@rb681000 You have to do calculation since each school is different. We have looked at different schools with different scenarios and it gives you a way to compare. Some schools price Tuition at 15 hours min so if you take 13 you still pay for 15, It is harder to find out all of the other fees you pay unless you can take to someone.

Anybody know schools who offer full ride/ full tuition scholarships for NM who have easier GPA requirements for renewal?

@hm1101 Several are around 3.0 with probationary periods. Alabama is one.

UCF is 3.2 calculated at the end of each spring, which gives some time for adjustment if needed. And if I’m reading it right, a solid first year will really help boost your odds there. It covers full tuition and room/board, and also has a small stipend and a computer.

Kentucky is 3.0:

For four-year renewable academic scholarships, such as the Singletary, Patterson, Presidential, Commonwealth, Kentucky Heritage Scholarship, Bluegrass Spirit Scholarship, see blue. Scholarship and Provost Scholarships, students are required to maintain full-time status (minimum 12 hours each semester) and achieve a 3.0 cumulative GPA each semester. Scholarship eligibility is checked at the end of the spring terms.
