Question - I’m starting to fill out my college applications and some of them ask if I’ve been named a NMSF. The only options are yes and no. Has anyone else encountered this? What’s the best solution?
@CA1543 I technically don’t have to submit them for a few months, but my parents would like me to finish them and get accepted so I can be “first in line” for housing. I think it may possibly be an optional question, but I’m not sure if it affects my ability to get the NM scholarships if I don’t answer it.
D3 is applying to UMN which has always encouraged getting the application in very early (public uni/rolling admissions, etc.). She is leaving the NMSF box blank for now and mentioning that she’s at least commended and that her NMSF status will be confirmed in September. If she makes SF we will be contacting their admission rep. to update her status.
If using the Common Ap. there definitely is a spot to list NMSF under the Education - Honors tabs. So there you should probably just wait till you know your exact status before you submit, so that all the schools have the same information (and you don’t have to call each one up separately with a status update).
@nutmeg_shippy you should contact the school’s NMSF liaison to get directions on how to proceed with your application for the time being, but in general as long as you notify everyone with your SF status in Sept. you should be fine. The reason that they want you to check the box (assuming you would know by then) is so they can flag you for special recruiting and perhaps automatic consideration (depending on the uni’s policies). But the liaison can get your name as well simply via a phone call or e-mail from you.
In order to be eligible for the NM scholarship you would need to be named a finalist and designate your first choice school by NMSC’s deadline. All that will be down the road a bit and you’ll get the details on how to proceed once you are named SF.
I wanted to update some info on Texas Tech NMF scholarship.
I went to scholarship office yesterday to inquire about how many kids keep their scholarships.
The info was emailed to me today.
Of the NMF scholarships for the past 4 years (only 1 of those years has been full ride), 77.7% graduated in 4 years and maintained their scholarships the entire 4 years.
They did not have stats based on majors. I would really like to see that one for sure.
Hello! I’m currently going into my senior year of high school. I took the PSAT in California and my selection index is 214. However, I’m moving to Texas in a week and I’ll be finishing my senior year there. Will I be compared to other test takers in California or in Texas or will I basically be missing my ability to even get a commendation?
Unfortunately, 214 is a bit low but you are definitely Commended so congrats! You’ll want to make sure your letter of commendation doesn’t slip through the cracks. You should contact National Merit Scholarship Corp. in Evanston to find out what the next steps for you are given that you moved before Senior year and are a commended scholar at the very least (get the contact information from the website: http://www.nationalmerit.org/s/1758/start.aspx?sid=1758&gid=2&pgid=61&cid=160).
Assuming you were eligible for the NMSQT competition, your old school should have received a list that included your name on it (these are all the kids at the school who are “advancing in the competition” i.e. are Commended and higher). You want to make sure that if your old school struck your name due to your upcoming move, it shows up somewhere else. Also, find out how you receive your letter of commendation - in the mail (Does NMSC have your new address)? Via your old school? Via your new school? That sort of thing.
