National Merit Cutoff Predictions Class of 2017

Only about 4 weeks to go – wishing everyone the best!!!

yes, good luck to everyone and all the children and lets see who is first to report.

Yes, please any Texas homeschoolers please report as soon as possible. We are in a very small public school with a NEW GC…Not a good thing.

I just got off the phone with National Merit people – NMSF are being mailed 8/23!!

I just called them too and they said it will be officially announced on 9/14. They said nothing about 8/23…but that would be great.

They also said the STILL don’t know the confirming score for the new SAT. Which is so annoying!

@luckymama64 – does this mean that mail is sent to schools on 8/23, or, mail is sent to students then? I’m assuming that is means that it is sent to the school!??

It will be sent to the school…and to homeschooling families. In 2014, they seem to have been sent out in waves. There was no other way to explain how different geographical areas got them at different times. I believe IL, home to NMS, was one of the last states to start getting mail. It wasn’t 2-3 day first class delivery either. But the end is in sight! Best wishes!!! Someone might very well hear late that week, and it gets fun after that.

Based on last year’s thread, that 8/23 date is likely when the NMSF stuff is mailed out to the schools. And it’s not exactly the fastest process either from what I’ve read. However, homeschool families at least have a date for when they should start checking the mail. Till that time, I guess we can all be on the lookout for the state summary reports from CB.

So the press release date is 9/14? That’s a Sunday.

That’s what she said. She wasn’t very helpful

@luckymama64 Thanks!! Another 3 weeks to go…

@Mamelot – you warm my soul – good old state summary reports - expected months ago – well maybe we’ll see them at some point but seems the NMSF release info might be out around same time. I have a DS '18 waiting in wings also to see if it makes sense to try for next year so every day is of some importance. Please home-schoolers report your state and NMSF scores. Hope Compass, Testmasters, Applerouth & others are out there early with any state cut off scores too!!

I called College Board about the state summaries and they told me they would not be released…that the info is in the reports that were sent to guidance counselors(the data files).

That’s odd. There are summary reports by state for everything else the CB does. There’s no indication on the website that CB is dropping the state summary report for just one test.

Is College Board in charge of the state summaries for NM? Or would NMSC do it?

(I’m really not sure how that all works, just throwing something out there.)

College Board produces the state reports, not NMS.

@3boystogo and others – So GCs then would likely have enough data to have a sense of the cut offs if they basically already have the state data summaries? Wonder why none of the test prep companies have gotten a hold of it and analyzed it yet. odd!!!

Will National Merit Commended Scholar announcements be sent out too on that day as well?

The only press release seems to involve the SF’s but schools might have their own policy about when to announce Commendeds. @Exwire, last spring your school should have received a list of all the students there who were advancing in the competition (no distinction at that point between SF’s and Commendeds). The SF’s will be announced by mid Sept. so if your name was on that school list and you are not an SF - ergo, you are (and the school knows you are) Commended. So check with your school to find out the details if you think you’ll miss your state cut-off but your SI is 209 or higher.

My daughter’s school holds an awards ceremony in early Nov. for all the NHS inductions, recognition of those on the honor roll, etc. At that time, all of the school’s SF’s and Commendeds are officially recognized. We usually receive the invite in late Oct. so that tells me that all official notifications have happened by then, including for the commended scholars.

We are homeschooers and the letter we received back in April said,
“Semifinalists and Commended Students
in the 2017 National Merit Program will
learn of their standing in September

when we send you notification and ask
you to inform your students.”

Commended notification is via letters sent out AFTER the SF press release (mid to late September). So even if you know you missed SF by a point or two, you aren’t officially commended quite yet. (Though I would think it’s a safe bet to add that to college applications where timing is a factor!)
