Not much info from the meeting. She assigned my daughter to the most experienced GC, because she probably got national merit. I don’t know what she was basing that on, I wasn’t at the meeting. My kid said, great…and left. So 218 is"probably " good enough for AZ according to an experienced GC.
@zeeke007 did she actually say “probably”?
My daughter isn’t home yet, going by what she texted. I’ll update if there is any more info.
@zeeke007 Thank you - this is actually quite a tidbit (although unconfirmed). GC’s err on the side of disclosing too little rather than too much. It’s very possible that administrators have the cut-offs and so “probably” would translate to they know her SI, they know she is eligible, they are just waiting for the official word in late Aug. / early Sept.
This news also supports the CompassPrep estimate of 217.
Your school is very on-the-ball. Our kids can’t even access their e-mail accounts yet. Hopefully by this Wed. . . .
When did they say they would be mailing out letters? The 23rd?
I don’t think GC’s now the cut-offs.
Weird. Wonder if that GC is basing this off new info, or just basing it off the (commended) info that supposedly went out in the spring. Or maybe they read this thread or compass prep! :-/
@flatKansas I got a letter from NMSC about the commended cutoff. It is 209 without a doubt. I’m a homeschooler, which is why I got a direct letter.
GC’s who call someone in to say they are “probably” NM and therefore reassign them to the most experienced GC at this point in time are speaking from knowledge. Where they get that knowledge is up to them. In previous years the posters haven’t second guessed the GC’s when this information starts to come out.
I’m sure @zeeke007 will update as appropriate but I’m thinking that AZ is a <= 218. Art predicted 217.
Some GC’s monitor CC also and perhaps saw Art’s prediction. Doubt that they would get advance information from NMSC, as that could compromise the plan to disseminate the cut-off’s in an organized manner.
Anyone plan on calling NMSC on 8/23?
It’s possible that some GCs that have been in the ring for long enough have NMSC connections. I wouldn’t at all be surprised if a good number of GCs had the cutoffs at this point.
What @nutmeg_shippy said.
@Itsgettingreal17 don’t bother. Here’s the skinny from NMSC: They will not provide any cut off information to anyone until the September release date (9/14, correct?) and then only by phone. They don’t like providing lists because that risks people making negative comparisons among states which they want to discourage.
Edit to add: And the confirming score from the new SAT isn’t available yet. SF’s will receive that information in their packets.
@Mamelot Boo!
@azcpamom at #5309: they actually don’t disseminate the cut-offs. They provide the names of the semi-finalists (and then the Commended Scholars a bit later). Cut-offs are figured out here on CC well before the Release Date and then any holes can be filled in by NMSC if you call them after mid-September. Of course, by then your school should have notified its semifinalists so hopefully no need to call unless you haven’t heard anything and you are pretty sure you made the cut. Also, Art warns against too many people calling at the same time (sounds as if NMSC can’t handle that volume).
In terms of homeschooling, we have Texas and Florida covered. Any other states with homeschoolers?
I don’t think GCs that say “probably” actually know anything at all.
My school’s GC, who has been doing this for a long time, said DD would “probably” make NMSF when the new scores first came out - and of course she actually had no idea.
I seriously doubt that any GCs (certainly 99.9% of them) have any inside information whatsoever. They’re probably just reading this thread too…
They are “probably” just reading this thread! LOL.
Our GC’s don’t know the difference between commended and semi-finalist.
Are the cutoffs for homeschoolers the same as the state which the homeschooler resides in? @saillakeerie
