National Merit Cutoff Predictions Class of 2017

for the previous MS poster with a child with a 213. my D texted about an hour ago. she made it in MS with a 213. her classmate also made it and his dad had told me he had a 212, but that is hearsay of course. but 213 made the cut in MS

@Pickmen there will be a thread just like this starting up next year!

@Pickmen There is a whole forum for NM on CC and there is a thread every year. I will say this group has been more active through the summer than others, but with all the uncertainty for class of 2017, that makes sense.

So excited for some and sad for others. Lisa, who wrote the condescending message at compass had her message edited by Art obviously because all the snarky was taken out and he said he would like to stay in the spirit of helpfulness that went on before. It really is OKAY to be an involved, concerned parent. Keep it up!!

@juniorse Congratulations!!! We’ve been waiting for a MS post as well. Did your daughter find out from a Principal or Counselor?

yes - they called them in to guidance to tell them

Thanks so much for the info @juniorse!

<=218 CO poster on Compass

No mail for me today in TX. Does anyone know how long mail was straggling last year? I’m getting unnecessarily anxious, lol.

Just learned that a student with a 221 did not make the highest cutoff (NJ, DC, NE Boarding schools, internationals). This is from a GC so is confirmed and legit.

Florida cutoff 217 @delilahxc

Thanks @swiftie787 Wasn’t the news either of us had hoped for but that I think we both suspected. At least now I can stop obsessively refreshing the page

Thanks for the update @Mamelot We are officially out of the running. Oh well.

I’m just wondering if most people think it’s fair that there is a different cut off for each state. We live in a more forgiving state, Colorado, but I feel bad for the kids in the harder states who do better than kids here but still don’t make it. As a mom, that might make me a little crazy. Lucky, we are in the middle here so it seems more fair.

I get angsty about the differing cutoffs sometimes (we live in CA), but if things were changed so the required score was the same for each state, then we’d have a different version of unfair. States like Wyoming, frex, might not have a single NMSF, while states like CA and New Jersey would have huge swaths of them. That doesn’t seem fair, either.

215 was the cutoff in Ky

Any more on Alabama?

the cutoffs in different states do not bother me (in fact, the score compression is a good thing and will cause less angst). What bothers me is that College Board made this test extremely unfair (too easy) at the top levels - where 1 wrong can be hurt you 2 selection index points. Its not a fair assessment. The difference between a SF in NJ and another kid not getting SF in NJ is a single grammar question. Two students can have the same total Score, and have different SI.

@nutmeg_shippy Last year, the TX score was confirmed on this forum the night of the 1st which was a Tuesday. My S school did not get the letter until the 3rd IIRC. There was a flurry of Texas posts the day of the 1st but not enough info to confirm until the night. So far we aren’t seeing a bunch of Texas posts!

@DartDart - I don’t know of any more “fair” way to do it and make it a competition that has impact in every state. If they just did top 1% nationally, some states would be left out completely, I’m guessing. What I think is truly unfair is for DC to be given the highest cutoff, lumped in with boarding schools, etc… Sure, lots of people who go to school in DC go to elite private schools. So lump those private schools in with the highest performers. But the way it is now, if there is a kid who is doing really well in DC public schools, he/she has to be super elite to have a shot at it.
