National Merit Cutoff Predictions Class of 2017

He did not not tell her…sorry

So FL is either point estimate or one higher.

He did say only 3 kids made it…all were above 218

@Dotexe I think you have it correct. They’ll cut at the score that approximates the number best. This year especially with all the clumped scores, they probably focused much “over/under” scenarios to see which cut-off to settle at. So if, for example, IL’s allocation was 550 (making this up), and 218 give them 600 while 219 gives them 235, they are going to settle on 219 even if they are “under” a bit. If they are doing this method in an unbiased fashion, some states will be over allocated a bit and others under allocated. In general, it seems that the total number of SF’s has been over 16,000 the past couple of years (reported) so maybe they do some more culling at the Finalist stage.

So 216 is out right? Unless nobody scored it at the school… which is highly unlikely

Where are all the TX posters? They must get mail late like we do. Just want confirmation. sigh

216 is an even number -its possible no one at that school had it. We can’t assume

No, we haven’t heard from anyone with a 216 in FL yet. Could be 216 or 217.

@18yrcollegemin don’t confuse gallows humor with snarkiness.

I really, really wish we would hear from someone with a 216

For those with scores in the range of Art’s predictions: http://www.■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■/national-merit-semifinalist-cutoffs/

If you know you / your child has NOT made it & you have not yet reported in, it would be helpful to hear - we’ll send your our support & you have a lot of company here. thanks

Me too @delilahxc. Biting nails here

@MotherOfDragons Didn’t see the humor there. Just seemed to be rude when I was trying to be nice to another poster. If it was intended as a joke, I apologize. Sometimes it’s difficult to get across sarcasm/gallows humor in a few typed words.

@MotherOfDragons I thought it was funny  I think we are all way beyond punchy at this point and everyone is going to read everything differently.

@itsgettingreal17 - good question! I would have thought we would be hearing from other Texans by now, but the only reported confirmed score I’ve seen is 221 (from 2 different posters). Since my D has the same score, I’m more relaxed than I was, but it would still be nice to see other scores coming in. If I hear anything I will definitely share it, but D’s school will probably be one of those that waits until 9/14 to notify the students…

I can’t believe Testmasters hasn’t already heard enough scores to figure out the cutoff. They should report.

@MotherOfDragons, I was going to add walking off a cliff while playing Pokemon Go.

I think both new SAT and PSAT is not fair to math kids. D was with @suzyQ7’s S, missing one in writing and suffered the terrible curve. Her SI is 224, so at least she didn’t suffer too badly. D suffered again in new SAT, 35 on reading for 5 reading wrong!! While the math curve is way more lenient!! If we want USA to be competitive in math and sciences, the curves got to change!!

Sorry about off topic. Just had to vent.

Any chance this thread will continue after all is revealed? I got another kid coming through and I really have learned a ton here. Great to have this keep going somehow for next year’s round.

@SincererLove Back in 1985 my DH missed qualifying by one point because he’s a math guy, not a word guy. So yeah, it’s always been unfair to the STEM people.

Come on Utah, represent! sigh
