National Merit Cutoff Predictions Class of 2017

@disshar Since you know your child has been named a NMSF, maybe if you call NM directly they could provide you with your child’s login information so he/she can get started on the application.

It seems that the person you are dealing with at the school is on a power trip.

We are out. D missed it by one point. She was bummed at first but has gotten over it already. Best of luck to those still waiting!!!

(I can finally go back to being a productive member of society. :)))

My son said that the school told the kids that the FL cutoff is 217. FL at 217 is a stunner to me.

When DS12 took it the cutoff was 210 and he missed by 1. I’m not sure what happened in FL to raise the cutoff so high.

@Proudpatriot: Florida adopted Common Core/Florida State Standards three years ago. And the new PSAT aligns with that. My daughter’s school usually had 4 or 5 semifinalists, this year only three.

DD missed it by 1 in MD. She’s disappointed, but her other test scores are better and she’ll be just fine, merit-$ wise. Congrats to all who did make it! Some of the cutoffs are quite higher than I would have expected.

Is anyone else a little ticked off b/c of the false hopes of the percentiles when we first got the reports last year? I feel tricked into having my child take the SAT so that we could be ready for this week to apply. I am happy for those who made it. But, if they are this high…surely not all of us are in the top 99 percentiles nationally. thoughts?

Wow, MD cutoff is 221. Seems like they threw in many high scoring states at 221. Shows the test result is too compressed. I mean there isn’t that much real difference in performances between 210 and 222, maybe 4 or 5 questions.

Heck, there isn’t that much difference between cutoff score of 218 for TN and NJ/DC cutoff score of 222!

DS also missed by 1 point in CA. on positive note, my DS doesn’t have to take SAT to confirm for NMF and spend that time to take his one humanities SAT II to complement 3 Math & science SAT IIs he already took (800s in all).

@kikidee9 I’m not. Since D only missed it by 1 point and her SI was a result of a significantly better math score than reading (that’s what annoys me) the percentile for her was correct (99+). She did great on the SAT (better than SAT) so I’m glad she took it. She’ll have lots of merit options.

Just saw Art’s post, MD SI at 221. S made the cut at 222.

TN exceeds Art’s prediction. GA will follow suit.

I agree with you about GA. TN was a big surprise. Didn’t see that coming! We are waiting in Indiana. It doesn’t look good. I haven’t heard much about GA on here or NC. Surprised.

I have to wonder what percentile tables will look like for the upcoming PSAT. Truly strange year this year.

@kikidee9 – my DD missed by one point in VA. I will say that I am disappointed in the way that this works. By working with unknown cutoffs from Jan forward, it is hard to know if you 1) should take the SAT for a confirming score and 2) consider schools that give NM a tuition incentive. By waiting until September (which is what is happening with a lot of schools, GCs, etc. it gives very little time to make these types of decisions. My DD has gotten zero communication from the school about even being commended. If I didn’t read this site, I would be completely in the dark about all of this.

@srk2017 impressive your kid scored 800 in all 3 math 2 and science subjects. I emphasized to my kid that colleges don’t really distinguish between kids who got 2200 in sat (or 33 in ACT) and those who got 2350 in sat (or 35 or 36 in act), and that he should focus his effort in developing ECs. His SAT/ACT scores are not great (all relative), so I am glad he can point to NMSF from CA to show colleges his standardized test scores should not play an important role in whether they should admit or deny him, but rather they should look at his courses/grades and ECs.

I haven’t even told my kid that he made NMSF in CA because frankly he is not even thinking about this because he dismissed the possibility he would ever make NMSF. I am just going to let him find out from his school counselor on Sept 14th and have him tell me, and I will act surprised. I am mainly happy that this will bolster his confidence.

@kikidee9

No I’m not mad about it (but can certainly understand your feelings) and DS – 217 in TN – could care less. However the hype for all these months makes it seem so much more devastating than it really is. When he got the notification of being the 99th percentile or whatever, it seemed like he was in. He will miss by 1 point just like so many of your kids…

On a lighter note, I now know EVERYTHING there is to know about NMSC, which schools have scholarships, how it’s scored, which scores, when, where, etc. My younger son is already sick of it, and he’s just a freshman…lol!!!

What’s the cutoff in Ohio?

@Enforcer88 No one knows for certain except it’s < = 217

The percentiles were 100% bogus. The College Board scammed all of us. I wish we had not taken the March SAT - it was only for NMS purposes, and we missed it by 1. I want my $50 back.

@websensation - I agree with you. The reason DS is taking SAT II in humanities is to show that he is not just another pure STEM kid. I also keep hearing that 33 vs 35 (ACT) or 2250 vs 2350 (SAT) doesn’t make any difference. If all things being equal doesn’t that carry some weight? In DS’s school lot of kids retake if they didn’t cross 2350 or 34. My advice for DS was don’t plan on taking any test second time, so far he was able to achieve his target scores.
