National Merit Cutoff Predictions Class of 2017

Nothing from school yet…we have 15 NMSF and the kids confirmed their names in the newspaper themselves…

Do schools sent out notifications of commended? How does that work. Found out our school handed out the NM letters today, but the person in charge had no idea about commended. It was BTS night & I was asking them other questions. This person was new to the job & sounding a bit overwhelmed.

Commended letters arrive later in the month. My daughter’s school was able to list the commended students in their press release yesterday but they probably just went off the list of students they received last spring.

@StressedinCA - that is crazy and so unfair to the NMSF kids.

@curiositycat333 – we have heard nothing and DD is commended. When my DS was commended, I called the school later in Sept and they mailed the commended certificate home.

Here is the Fairfax County, Virginia public school list:

I just found this article.

213 semifinalists in a single school district!

Is fcps the school district with most NMSF in the nation?

@cys254 that school district has 21 high schools! So that averages out to be just over 10 per high school.

Are you sure their school district is the whole county? That is a big school district. Where I live school districts are by city.

Edit to add: yup, the 10th biggest school district in the nation.

and renowned TJHSST has 119 of the 213. I suspect that TJHSST probably has more NMSF than any other high school in the nation.

@UniformMom - yes…that is the whole county (Fairfax County) and it is a very large swath of Northern Virginia. As @Dave_N mentions, it is the home of TJHSST with 119 NMSF (down from 162 last year)>

Wow! (from our school with 0 last year and 2 this year)

I think TJ’s 119 beats the SF Bay Area schools that normally get 80-100, but I haven’t checked them all. Mission San Jose’s number was lower than than, though they have been around 120 in some past years, I believe.

In contrast, LA Unified, the 2nd largest district in the US, has very few NMSF. Most students listed for LA attend private schools. Just goes to show what an advantage it is to be not disadvantaged.

The NMSC drives me crazy! I’d love to see a copy of the DC list, but the folks who’ve published it in the past aren’t publishing it this year. I can’t find it anywhere. I’m trying to get someone at the Washington Post to consider publishing it. We’ll see what happens.

I hadn’t noticed Mission San Jose’s number yesterday - I just counted 84. Highest I had noticed before that was 49, but I was scrolling pretty fast at times.

One thing that surprised me was the low number of NMSFs at some private high schools and magnet schools, at least in our area.

Found the (short, lol) Kansas list.

I was also surprised to not see more names from the private schools.

@candjsdad can someone at WaPo or another media outlet not send you the press release? It’s not exactly confidential information at this point.

Others?

Texas link is embedded in this article. I had to download Scribd app to see the whole list. Hopefully someone has a better link, but this is all I could find for now!

Anyone find Iowa? Still waiting for confirmation from principal. Would like to see it in writing!
