National Merit Discussion Class of 2026

On Reddit, they said that their guidance counselor said that they didn’t make Semifinalist (with 222) but a different student did (with a higher index).

Does anyone know when you can call NMSC to confirm your child’s semi-finalist status? Do you have to wait until after the official press release comes out? I’m concerned about not being notified in a timely manner by my son’s school.

I read somewhere that you can call on NMSC on Sep 10 to confirm the status of your child.

Same here. We have had multiple changes in administration. So afraid this might have fallen through the cracks.

Virginia is above 222 per Reddit. So, it will be higher than last year.

Anyone in Southern California get notified by your school principal yet?

Any news from Michigan? Waiting anxiously.

I’m in shock by how many states have come Higher than Art/compass predicted. We thought we would be ok sitting one point above prediction but seems like it will be at least two points from prediction (3point up from last year) for our state (OR)

we had a whole application strategy that will need to be reassessed

As suspected, DD found out today that she is a NMSF in Virginia. 224 index

do you know what the reported cut off is for Oregon? we have not heard from our school. thanks.

So 224 will most likely not qualify in NJ? :frowning:

Compass says reported at 225 but they are wanting to confirm. Cannot post link

According to compass/Art seems to be at least 219 if not higher :frowning:

We are sad here since we felt Somewhat safe with a 218.

Nothing yet. Son has a 219 and we thought he had a solid chance, since Michigan hasn’t ever hit 220. But all bets are off this year it seams. I’m still hoping! We have another new principal this year, so no expectations that he’d tell him. And my son is likely the only one in contention at his school.

Good luck.

My daughter got her letter yesterday from school and we were expecting it. So far she just knows of one other student from her school. We are in MA and a bit surprised by the possible jump in index but at the same time it’s so so intense academically in our area.

It seems like the jump in required indexes is nationwide. This might indicate that the test score averages were higher everywhere and the test might have been “easier” than previous cycles.

It’s curious to me that this didn’t lead to the same kind of jump for the commended cutoff (which compass got right on prediction). Shouldn’t there be some kind of correlation between moves in that and the NMSF cut+offs?

Maybe, but it would depend on the score distributions between the NMSF scores and the commended score levels.

That would imply the distribution at the top is quite differently skewed to what it usually is. Wonder why that would be?

I wonder if the adaptive testing didn’t quite do what it should. Like students got the hard module 2 but it wasn’t hard enough to allow for a good distribution of scores, so a bunch of high performers all got scrunched up with top scores?

My daughter is at 227 in MA….no word from the school yet but we feel comfortable at that index score.
