I’m a junior applying for Summer Ventures for the 2016 summer. I’m having a little trouble deciding on a main topic. I want to major in biomedical engineering but I’m also very good at chemistry and really enjoy it. What kind of things are included in the biology topic and in the physical science topic? Is there a focus on genetics in the biology topic or no?
Also I noticed they have a “neither” option under the gender box. I identify as a nonbinary gender and while I normally just choose female because it’s all that I’m given I was wondering if anyone had any experience with their procedures for those who choose the “neither” option and if that affects the application.
I was at the ECU campus in 2014 and Bio was offered, but I wasn’t in it. From what I can remember, a lot of the emphasis was put on DNA stuff (they did some gel electrophoresis) and just stuff that are seen better under a microscope. It also depends on what you choose to do you research project on - for example, my friend did a project on microscopic worms but he was on the other side of campus from the rest of the Bio kids, so he may have just been a special case.
I think they have a pretty strong medical emphasis based on their field trips. There’s one particularly jarring one that I don’t want to spoil for you if you do go for the bio program at ECU
I highly doubt that your gender preference will affect your app in any way. Just be honest and put down what you see fit.
Good luck!
