Hi parents — my son is a freshman euphonium player. He was rejected from BUTI and waitlisted for NEC’s Summer Orchestra Institute. I’m wondering how common it is for freshmen to get into these competitive summer programs. For those who’ve applied before, did your freshman get in or get waitlisted/rejected? Any insight on typical difficulty, what helped (audition repertoire, recordings, teacher recs), and also when final decisions are made re waitlist applicants? Would it be ok to write to NEC to ask about son’s chances?
My kid was accepted to BUTI as a freshman, but she plays viola – they need a bunch and have trouble finding them. I think it is harder for you, because they likely are only taking a few. You may want to cast a wider net with other programs for the future.
That makes sense, instrument demand probably plays a big role. Euphonium spots are usually pretty limited compared to strings like viola. From what I’ve seen, freshmen do get in sometimes, but it’s not super common, especially for smaller sections. The waitlist isn’t a bad place to be though, things can shift as people commit elsewhere.
hi still havent heard back from nec regarding waitlist. any idea on when they’ve closed the wailist in the past?
