Need Help from Electronics Mavens for Bluetooth Wireless Portable Speaker

S1 wants a “bluetooth wireless portable speaker” for his birthday. Does anyone have any recommendations? I’m kind of not very informed when it comes to this stuff. TIA.

I’ll be reading with interest! DS moved his stereo set up to a different room, and I’d like to get him a wireless speaker system for his LR!

Look them up on Amazon.com and read all the reviews.

bought this one a few months ago and really like it

NoVADad99, I was hoping my friends here could help me avoid that.

We have a Jambox. Simple to use and good sound, too.

One tip, keep the bluetooth device/transmitter as far away from 2.4 Ghz cordless phones and microwaves as the latter two could cause serious electronic interference issues with bluetooth and other devices operating on the 2.4 Ghz frequency band.

Kiddo had a jambox that she really liked. It worked quite well until the cat ate the charger cord. :)

We gave our friends a Bose Soundlink as a wedding gift (FYI - Costco has is on sale today):

The friends love it!

Why is the Bose version normally $259 and the MOCREO that kiddie mentioned only $16?? This is what I need help with!!

Even a non-audiophile like me can detect the difference in sound quality between a no-name cheapo speaker and D’s jambox. I have not used the Bose one, but given the co’s reputation and our friends’ rave reviews, I thought I would mention it (also it was mentioned in one of our wedding gift threads.)

The jambox we bought for D is on sale, too:

http://jawbone.com/store/buy/minijambox

Of course the sound quality will be different in a $17 vs. a $100 speaker but what does son want to use it for. Will it be used in a dorm room? Will he just use it to listen to youtube videos or have better sound for watching movies or playing games on his ipad? Does he want to use it to connect his phone to? Is he a big music fan and wants to listen to high quality music he has on it? Will he be carrying it around in a backpack to use in many locations? This will help you decide what kind of price point you want for this.

In addition to sound quality, as kiddie mentioned, weight, durability, and range are probably two other important factors. If this is something that will be in his backpack for a long time, a minijambox is a good choice (durable and weighs .5 lb). Even CNet gave it 4 out 5 stars (pretty impressive because their reviewers are hard to please):

No, no dorm room or back pack; he’s turning 30 and is in grad school. I’m leaning toward the expensive Bose one. Someone please talk me out of it.

Bose makes an excellent product! Sorry…can’t talk you out of it!

Bose is a local company in MA and makes great products. If you can afford it, you can’t go wrong with a Bose speaker.

We have a Bose docking station for our ipod, and I cannot believe the excellent sound that comes out of that little box!

As ConfusedMominMA said, Bose is a quality product from here in MA… Great story, Dr. Bose bought a stereo when he moved to Boston as a graduate student and couldn’t believe how crappy the speakers were–I can do better, he said, and he did!

OK, I bought the Bose and had it shipped. DS will be quite happy with my selection, I’m sure. Thank you all!!

Nice!!

I just told H I wanted a wireless portable bluetooth speaker for my laptop. I think I’ll email him links to the Bose and jambox. I’d love to have the Bose, but maybe he’ll spring for the Jambox when he sees how much cheaper it is. B-)

BTW, playing a symphony on my mother’s Bose Soundwave yesterday, was astounded by the volume of quality, non-distorted sound that comes out of that little thing!

I hope my DS likes it. He should.
