Need Help w/College List [GA resident, 1430 SAT (790 Math), 32 ACT (36 Reading), 3.83 GPA, <$45k]

I want to major in:

1st Choice: Mathematics
2nd Choice: Computer Science
3rd Choice: Computer Engineering

Budget:

30 to 45k

Parents are seperated, so I am eligible for the Condit Bill for California. It can reduce my costs for the UCs by a lot.

According to CollegeVine:

Reach:

  • UC Berkeley
  • UCLA
  • Stanford
  • CalTech

Target/Hard Target:

  • Florida State University
  • University of Georgia
  • UCSD
  • William and Mary
  • UC Irvine
  • University of Florida
  • UT Austin
  • UCSB
  • UNC
  • UVA
  • USC
  • UMich
  • Georgia Tech
  • Emory

Safety:

  • Kennesaw State University
  • Georgia State University
  • University of Minnesota, Twin Cities
  • Purdue University
  • Texas A and M
  • UCSC
  • UWisconsin
  • UIUC
  • OSU
  • UWashington (Seatle)
  • Maryland
  • UC Davis

Will you be eligible for one year in CA under Condit or all four years. I was just reading about it and it seems that it’s a year to year thing.

What is your unweighted GPA. Give yourself a 4 for an A, 3 for a B, 2 for a C.

Add up the points and divide by # of classes.

How many APs do you have? What’s your highest level of math?

It’s a long list!! And you’ll need to cull some (too expensive) and add others (good price) and once I know your unweighted GPA I’ll give you a write up.

Thanks

  1. I will be eligible all four years.
  2. Unweighted is 3.83
  3. I have had 10 APs and I am taking 1 this year as a senior, so total is 11 APs.
  4. My highest level of math is differential equations.

Thank you for time and consideration.

OK - so we don’t know more about you - ECs , etc. but I can say this - your budget is the first cut -

Do you qualify for need? Has your parent filled out the NPC. I put Emory’s NPC below.

Alas - Stanford and Cal Tech are high reaches.

Go to your hard Targets.

W&M is over $60K - how will you pay? They do have need aid but they don’t promise to meet need.

UT Austin is well over your max budget. How will you pay? They don’t meet need , nor rupport OOS kids.

UNC/UVA are over your budget - have you checked their net price calculator? THey are the two publics that promise to meet need.

U Mich - you have near zero chance of getting to budget - and it’s over $80K the last two years.

Tex A&M - unless you get the Brown Scholars - you can’t make budget. Same with UIUC, U Wash, and UMD - you can’ afford them. If you can’t afford them, then they’re beyond high reach.

OK - for the UCs, you need to do the 3 UC GPAs. @Gumbymom just posted their acceptance rates. Of course, your test won’t matter.

I don’t see you getting into Stanford and Cal Tech, but no pain no gain.

FSU and UGA are reaosonable as are W&M but that is not affordable.

I don’t see you getting into any other school (non UC) in your hard targets - except possibly Florida. Take your unweighted and add .5 for Honors and 1 for AP - and what’s your GPA. Their average GPA is a 4.4-4.6 (25/75) - so if you’re above 4.4, you have a better shot.

Safety - not all - you’ll get into all - but other than Kennesaw and GSU (do you need both??, here’s what I see:

UMN - a target if CE - and you’ll be in budget

Purdue, a target for math but reach for engineering - within budget

A&M - I’d not apply - budget -but you’d get in

Wisconsin - hard target to reach and not affordable

UIUC - hard target for path, reach for engineering and not affordable

OSU - possible with merit and likely

U Wash - hard target math, high high high reach for CS/CE (2% OOS rate) - and not affordable

UMD - reach - and not affordable.

See this for UCs - I’m guessing Davis is a target best case but @Gumbymom can help better.

If it were me, I’d focus on schools that can make budget!!

U of Alabama - you’d be $20K a year all in - it’s assured with auto merit.

U of Kansas - you’d be high $20s - it’s assured with automerit.

There are other auto merit schools - UAH, Ms State, and more.

I think UMN is a good choice - and you have - it will be high $30s with merit. But is not assured.

So check the prviates - Stanford, Cal Tech for affordability - your family needs to do the NPCs.

Make sure you include colleges, and they’re solid, that are assured for admission and cost (Bama, UAH, Ms State, Kansas, Iowa State, Kansas State, etc)

Include schools that “could” make #s - such as UMN, Ohio State

Eliminate schools that won’t make merit. To me that’s W&M although they do have need aid but certainly UT Austin, U Mich, Ga Tech (close but not at your max budget), A&M, UIUC, Washington and Maryland

You might consider SMU too - for your subjects - and they have the Presidential scholarship.

You might also add some California State schools - SDSU, Long Beach State, CPSLO, CPP, etc.

Hope that helps.

For CA publics you need to compute your three GPA’s with this calculator - unweighted, weighted-capped, and weighted-uncapped. Folks here can help you with “chancing” once you have those numbers. CollegeVine isn’t reliable since it doesn’t use the UC GPA algorithm. CA publics, as you probably know, are test-blind, so it’s all about GPA and essays… and the essay format is much different from the common app, so start early on the “PIQ’s,” as the apps are due in November.

Consider the Cal State schools as well - the Cal Polys, UCSD, SJSU and so on.

All of the CA publics will be a lot tougher to get into for CS or engineering than for math. It sounds like you prefer math anyway; just know that if you get in for math, you’re not going to be able to freely switch to CS or engineering. UCSD Math-CS could be a great option for you. UCLA has Mathematics of Computation. Davis has Mathematical and Scientific Computation. These majors would allow you to do a math major with a CS foundation built in.

At UCSB, check out the College of Creative Studies, which requires an additional application in addition to the UC app. CCS has its own major in Mathematics and also in Computing.

Do the Net Price Calculators for schools like Emory, USC, UVA, UNC, that meet need according to their formulae, show that they would give you enough aid? (Note that you’ll need to document both parents’ financial info.) If so, there are probably additional options for you, at similar schools. OTOH, most of the public U’s you are listing will not meet your budget unless you’re a resident in that state.

If you would like to refine your list based on your interest in math, this site may offer you further ideas:

You may benefit from considering the University of Rochester, for example.

It’s inaccurate unfortunately.

Umich, UIUC and UWash will be reaches.
Purdue and UMD will be high targets for Math and reaches for CS.

Also, as others have said, all those except Purdue will be unaffordable.

You will need to redo your list to include affordable choices that are not as reachy for admissions. @tsbna44 has provided some suggestions.

Please don’t use CollegeVine for chancing. It’s not accurate.
