As a good Mom, you are taking the time to ask questions, so that you can clarify D’s options. She sounds like she has a good head on her shoulders, and will ultimately make the choice that is right for her. Another thought—what if she took reg. History but AP English? That way she would get bumped up on her GPA, and be given a solid foundation for writing strong essays.

Just an update.

D found out that AP Euro IS being taught for the first time this year at her school – unfortunately, she found out it is being taught 3rd period so she can’t take that course either.

She did decide to keep her current schedule which included the vocal ensemble and dance performance classes. Because of the scheduling conflicts, d will have to settle for just the 2 honor courses that fit her schedule this year.

D plans to explain in her college essays that she attends a "Fine Arts’ magnet high school and due to her performing arts committments, could only fit AP English and AP calculus in her Jr year (she is also taking spanish 3 and reg history). Although her schedule is “lighter”, I do believe she made the right choice.

D does plan to take the AP US Hist exam this year anyway. And APOL, she IS currently taking AP english this year, and plans to take both the SAT subj 2 English Language and AP Eng tests this spring, and SAT Sub 2 Math level 2 this fall. Next year she is definitely planning to take 4 honors courses (AP Eng, IB Spanish 4, Physic H, IB Global studies-- and yes, the IB global will count as US Govt and meets UCs requirements). Of course, we are hoping d won’t have any scheduling conflicts next year.

D made Southern California Regional honor choir as a frosh, and could not try out last year (because her school was not eligible to have any students audition last year).
After being strongly encouraged by her choir instructor, D is currently preparing to audition Oct 7 for the Southern Califronia regional choir and California “All - State” choir. The audition includes having to sing a solo in Italian and getting graded on her accent and diction – which will stretch D by taking her “out of her comfort” zone–so I am very proud of her for being willing to try, even if she doesn’t end up being chosen (about 1000 students vie for 250 spots).

mom of 4-forgive my delay in responding-but it sounds like you have helpt your daughter to see what her options were, and then feel good about her decision. That is such a gift to her. I will hold good thoughts that she is accepted into the All-State choir for California–and a great university down the line. You have a right to be proud of her!

I’m mom of four’s older D, and just saw this post, as I was gone from CC for a while.

Anyway, I think my sister made a good choice. But then, I didn’t take all the hardest courses I could in high school (though I did take quite a few), so I could have time to do other things.

I wanted to explain something, though. First, the 220ish hours (don’t know the exact number) to take the IB History of the Americas test (what IB Global Studies prepares you for) is an IB requirement. At my school, we take the higher level exam, which requires two years of IB study. She could take the standard level exam, but that would be kind of pointless, as most colleges don’t give you credit for standard level IB exams.

And my sister isn’t going for the diploma, so taking the IB history test is not going to help her with admissions. It would be nice to get the credit, though, as she can probably pass.
