Need vacuum recommendations

My old Kirby stopped working today while I was in the middle of using it. One minute it was on and then it just quit. I thought it had come unplugged, but it is just dead.

I am so confused about what to buy as a replacement. I just talked to my neighbor who has a Dyson and said she doesn’t like it because it doesn’t have much suction. I thought they were the best.

I need recs for one to use on carpet, with attachments, and I have a dog that sheds a lot.

Would you consider taking it to the Kirby doctor?

Shark liftaway. 129 on sale in Costco.

I had one of the original Dysons and I loved it. Lasted me 20 years, really! Then it broke and I bought another Dyson but not one with the ball. My daughter and her hubby have the “ball” one and I tried it and didn’t like it. So I bought the cheaper model and it works great!!

I really like my Miele Marin. It is not inexpensive though.

Sweet baby Jesus!! I just looked at the current prices. We paid $600 back in the day. OMG - that is quite a price jump. Not sure it is worth double what we paid.

I-robot. Then only occasionally need to vacuum the sofa.

I love my Dyson with the small ball. It is so easy to maneuver and can switch to hardwood floors. It sucks so hard that I can’t use it on entry way rug. We have a cordless Dyson at work. While it’s handy, I don’t think it sucks up as much as my corded one.

Thanks for your replies. I have always heard good things about Dyson and Shark, but there are so many different models of each one! I am easily overwhelmed when faced with too many to choose from!

Regarding the Kirby doctor, I think it is too old and not worth the money to rehabilitate. Over the years I have replaced the power cord and the motor. Now it won’t stand up by itself and the self-propel feature doesn’t work, making it super heavy to push around. But until today, it did a good job sucking up stuff.

This is the model of Dyson that I bought this time. It closely resembles the 20 year old one that I had before: https://www.amazon.com/Dyson-Multi-Floor-Upright-Bagless-Cleaner/dp/B01N3WJ8A5/ref=sr_1_1?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI9pylwPil5gIVsRx9Ch17qQnTEAAYAiAAEgIRy_D_BwE&hvadid=176946551673&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9013305&hvnetw=g&hvpos=1t2&hvqmt=e&hvrand=12970133361210439577&hvtargid=kwd-21070104450&hydadcr=8646_9761141&keywords=dyson%2Bdc33&qid=1575804318&sr=8-1&th=1

I’ve had my original Dyson for 15 years and it’s still going strong. I have a shoulder problem though and it’s heavy. I’m thinking of adding a Roomba i7 into the cleaning mix as we have all hardwoods now and I think it would work well enough.

I have a Shark Rocket that was inexpensive and on sale at Target. I love it…picks up everything.

And we have central vac for comparision!

I second Miele, although they are pricey. Worth it if you’re planning to use it for a long time. We get aftermarket bags for a lot less than the Miele ones, and they work fine.

OP here. I have just replaced half my house with wood-look tile. Funny thing is I had ordered and received last week a Shark Rocket cordless vac to use on the hard floors. I had just unboxed it yesterday morning and it was being charged while I was using the Kirby to vacuum the upholstered furniture. When the Kirby died, I used the new Shark to finish and I guess it did fine. I just don’t think the cordless battery will last long enough and be strong enough for the carpet in three bedrooms and hallway. Did I mention the massive amounts of dog hair? (He’s a good dog. Shedding is his only flaw!)

My Shark is corded…so I don’t have that problem with a charge. But we have a shedding cat, and it does fine with cat hairs. Does have to be emptied sort of frequently, but that’s not hard.

We had Dyson’s. While they did suction very nicely I found it difficult to use, and very heavy. Also, found myself constantly cutting the pet hair out of the roller brush and wasn’t all that impressed with it’s function on hard surface flooring.

When D went to college we got her a Shark lift away (several different models available). OMG…LOVED that thing. Light weight, very functional and great for using on stairs. We now have two of our own.

Bottom line…I’d vote for a Shark. As someone else mentioned, Costco carries them and they often go on sale.

We have a Dyson Animal which we bought when our labrador retriever was young (he died in 2014). We still are using it. It has great suction. The only drawback is that it’s heavy. I’ve been thinking of buying a lighter weight broom type vacuum because it’s annoying to have to drag out the big guns when you have a minor mess.

We have a Kirby. We bought it at huge discount by sales team at the door, but still pricey ($600?). Honestly it’s too heavy for me, but DH liked it… and he does the vacuuming (well, at least downstairs - I do upstairs and the stairs with a Kenmore canister),

I would consider a small (maybe rechargeable?) vacuum mostly for the kitchen wood floor. Any recommendations?

I’ve had the same Miele canister for 20 years now and it’s still going strong. I literally LOVE it. It was not inexpensive 20 years ago, I think $700 (and as was previously mentioned, they’re more now), but when the cost is amortized over 20 years AND with have great of a job it does, it’s not crazy. Miele all the way!!

Team Miele Canister here.

H does not like canisters at all & complains. I find it amusing, as if having an upright would suddenly cause him to vacuum more than once every 2 years.

We love our robotic vacuum cleaners–Roomba. They are programmable for folks who like that and we can set it and leave the house as we choose. Haven’t had a “regular vacuum” for the house in a long time.
