A friend’s 7-year-old was just diagnosed with cancer, and is stuck in the hospital for a while. He loves jokes, both hearing them and telling them. I’m trying to send him some on a regular basis, but lots of the ones I am finding are either off-color or involve vocabulary that’s a bit advanced for him. Anyone have a good, short, funny joke that a kid that age might like?

Poor kid! Here is a link with jokes for kids:

Get him the Captain Underpants books. They are very easy chapter books. Even if some adult reads them to him (someone with a sense of humor), as they are comic stip type illustrations he will have fun “reading” them afterward. They are VERY elementary-school-boy humor.

He will love the Captain Underpants series. I worked as a Library TA in a public elementary school for close to 10 years and we couldn’t keep the copies on the shelf. The boys loved them. They’re written by Dav Pilkey. Also check out his --The Dumb Bunnies series—and another, The Adventures of Super Diaper Baby.

What did one wall say to the other wall?
Meet you at the corner.

What do you get if you cross a grizzly bear and a kangaroo?
A fur coat with BIG pockets.

What did Tarzan say when he saw the elephants coming over the hill?
Here come the elephants!
What did Tarzan say when he saw the elephants coming over the hill wearing sunglasses?
Nothing. He didn’t recognize them.

My eight year olds favorite joke…(I just wish he could remember telling me the joke…has to have told me at least ten times)

A cowboy arrives at a ranch on Sunday, stays 3 days and leaves on Friday…how is that possible?

His horse’s name is Friday.

Why won’t cannibals eat clowns??

Because they taste funny.

(do most 7 year-olds know what a cannibal is?)

Why won’t cannibals eat clowns??

Because they taste funny.

(do most 7 year-olds know what a cannibal is?)

Oh my god, are you kidding me??? That is beyond inappropriate for a 7 yr old kid. If he doesn’t know what a cannibal is he won’t even get the joke. If he does he’ll be more scared than amused.

Our kids (young at the time) heard if from a friend, and loved it. I think they knew it was a joke.

Cannibal jokes are standard stuff for kids, especially boys.

Captain Underpants and Super Diaper Baby are great suggestions.

Where does the king keep his armies?
In his sleevies.

What do you get when you pour boiling water down a rabbit hole?

How do you cross an alligator-infested swamp?
Just swim! All the gators are at the party.

THANK YOU, Thank You, thank you!

He loves telling jokes to his doctors, nurses, and visitors, and I think these will be hits with him. (When I did on-line searches, I had trouble deciding what was age-appropriate, and to be honest, nothing seemed particularly funny to me – perhaps because of the situation.)

Thanks again. And if you know any others, I am interested!

whatever4, best wishes for a comfortable hospital stay and a full recovery for him.

This one is off the wall, but it never fails to wipe out my little guy (and he then rings endless changes on it, which he finds amusing long after we do - but that’s the nature of this stuff anyway):

Ask me which bucket is the yellow paint in.
Which bucket is the yellow paint in?
The yellow bucket.

Ask me which bucket the red paint is in.
Which bucket is the red paint in?
The red bucket.

Ask me which bucket the blue paint is in.
Which bucket is the blue paint in?
The blue bucket.

Ask me which bucket the purple paint is in.
Which bucket is the purple paint in?
They don’t come in purple.

“What are you doing under there?”

“Under where?”

“Ha! I just made you say underwear!”
