NESCAC Spoken Here:

Note that Middlebury’s overall score of 90 for this year is only 1 point lower than when it tied for 9th a few years ago (Wesleyan's Ludicrous U.S. News Ranking - #29 by merc81).

In my personal opinion, Oberlin had a slight “blip” reputationally following the Gibson story. My oldest had just “committed” to going there when the case was settled etc. and initially caused pause, bad press, etc. However, post-Covid, on campus the case/story just was never a factor; never discussed, no apparent undercurrent, change in quality, etc. It doesn’t appear, in the last several years, that it’s a factor, and the school seems strong, both financially (A+ Forbes financial grade) and academically. Big endowment and highly touted publicly by many famous alumni and their kids. I can’t say enough about the quality of professors, the intellectual and cultural vibe, and the internship/alumni/job connections. Oberlin is literally the reason my oldest had a FULLY funded internship (including travel, rent, living, etc.) in NYC and a job offer waiting for her. Point being, from our (admittedly personal) perspective, in the past few years it has appeared/presented as the Oberlin I have always read/heard about it to be, and based on the students I know who’ve recently “committed” to attend, it looks hopeful it will remain that way and that “rankings” will begin to reflect that again.

I think Oberlin is great. It made it into my D’s list. I was just suggesting a reason for the drop.

And now it’s Tufts turn to make the ESPN SportsCenter Top 10 plays. Women’s soccer, once again. NESCAC getting some nice exposure this year.

Those who enjoy film may want to view a depiction of this era of collegiate life:

All right then, moving back into the 21st century, the Williams Ephs hosted the Williams Invitational women’s golf tournament over the weekend. NESCAC team results:

Williams - 3rd
Amherst - 4th
Bowdoin - 5th
Wesleyan/ Hamilton - 6th
Middlebury - 9th
Bates - 12th
Trinity - 17th

On the player leaderboard, Emily Renoff of Bowdoin finished first overall with a 3 under par performance.

For those keeping track, and I know there are many, many of you, Wellesley won the tournament, and their own Sarah Yeh placed second behind Renoff in the player standings shooting 1 over par. You know, Wellesley is really good at sports. If we ever admit a women’s college into the NESCAC, it should probably be the Blue.

Uh oh…0-2 Bates went into Middletown and got the W against 2-0 Wesleyan.

As much as I have a fondness for my dear Mother Wellesley, I think Smith far outperforms her in many sports—their basketball team alone is a powerhouse!

True. They do have a solid basketball program. Wellesley owns top spot in crew, though Smith is coming on and has made great strides with an old Card rower as their coach. IDK about the other sports, but the Blue is obviously good at golf, at least this year. Ok, admit them both!

Some great NESCAC field hockey action over the weekend, with #23 Hamilton FH defeating #22 Bowdoin FH, at Bowdoin, and #12 Bates FH beating #9 Amherst FH.

Nice story about Bates and a rower on the men’s team who is battling cancer. I can’t imagine being that age and facing something like that. Good for the Bates kids who raised money and won the College Cup of the Dempsey Challenge and got to meet McDreamy in the flesh.

As a side note, Patrick Dempsey has worn Bowdoin swag in a few episodes of Grey’s Anatomy, as his character is a Bowdoin graduate, though his (real life) hometown is Lewiston. Spreading the love I suppose.

Nice accomplishment, Bates.

@Lindagaf - is the College Cup a challenge among all Maine colleges or just the Maine 3?

Wow. Our conference is good at women’s field hockey. Week 4 T25 rankings:

(1) Middlebury
(3) Williams
(6) Tufts
(11) Bates
(12) Wesleyan
(13) Amherst
(22) Hamilton

Looks like that Hamilton win knocked Bowdoin out of the T25. But fear not, Polar Bears; this is week 4, and playing in this conference will provide more than ample opportunity to climb back into the poles.

Seems like the Middlebury women are exceedingly good at this sport.

For the 4th time this season, little ol’ D3 NESCAC makes it into Sports Center Top 10 Plays. Tufts soccer women again! Has the UAA or SCIAC gotten this kind of exposure? This is crazy.

Saw that!

I assume there is some kind of submission process and the teams/people making it are submitting clips of their plays.
