Love Mamdani! Love Africana studies!
African-American Studies was only just taking off when I was at Wesleyan, but I do remember taking several Government courses with a deep bench of reading assignments from books by Lester Thurow, Edward Banfield and others, chronicling the plight of The Big Cities. And there was already a thoroughly vetted, sub-specialty of Music that had been pioneered by Wesleyan, called, âEthnomusicologyâ which was completely based on the study of non-Western musical traditions.
While he didnât go to a NESCAC school, nor did the NYT devote an article to his education, Mark Levine, the Democratic candidate for NYC Comptroller and current Manhattan Borough President, graduated from Haverford as a physics major. Go, SLACs!
Clearly, the authors of this article never had Sunday brunch at Bryn Mawr!
We ate at both Bowdoin and Bates last spring and thought Bowdoin was better, though Bates had an awesome selection of cereal.
Oh, that cereal bar!!!
Itâs not a NESCAC but the best dining hall Iâve seen at any college anywhere was at Skidmore.
Weâve been to and eaten at a few of these and theyâre great (especially compared to the slop they used to serve back in my day) but Skidmore was ridiculous. My goodness, the options and the quality were impressive.
I havenât been to one yet that compares.
Bates has the most amazing staff working food service!
peta2âs Vegan Report Card
Colby: A+
Tufts: A+
Trinity: A+
Hamilton: A
Bates: B
Wesleyan: B
Connecticut College: B
Amherst: B
Bowdoin: F
Middlebury: F
Williams: F
My how the tables have turned.
There must be some kind of mistake.
The vegan food at Colbyâs Foss dining hall is very, very good.
As a rule, I assume that PETA donât know what theyâre talking about. Since I donât know how many questionnaires were filled and returned from each of these colleges, I cannot actually say whether these grades are based on one, four, or 100 questionnaires, or whether they were even filled out by actual students.
I do know that when my daughter attended Midd, there were a large number of vegan options, and I am highly skeptical that this has changed.
EDIT: Battle of the Birds 2025:
Wesleyan shares NESCAC football title for second time in history:
That video is from last year. WesU beat Trinity in the deciding game and wins NESCAC for the second year in a row yesterday.
The times they are a-changing.
Nonetheless, the Cardinals and Bantams finished as NESCAC Co-Champions in football this year.
How do they share the title with identical records when one team beat the other? Thatâs a tiebreaker in most situations.
Suspect folks in Middletown donât feel like they share the title. Would also doubt the Bantams went into the game thinking they were assured a portion of the title.
But who knows?
The NESCAC is weird.
For context, the Bantams finished as Co-Champions two years ago as well:
With the upcoming post-season NCAA tournament play in football, the NESCAC may need to arrive at a tiebreaking system to represent its automatic bid (should the NESCAC be awarded an automatic bid, which seems likely).
Weird
