Our oldest daughter (the one whose college journey was responsible for landing me here on this forum ten years ago) just had her first child. So I begin my new adventure…
It is delightful and challenging. While I never fully adjusted to having both daughters gone, we did well and visited often. Suddenly the old longing is back and the distance between our homes seems greater…
I don’t anticipate grandparent hood for 5-10 more years…it’s been hard to convince my spouse to keep the swingset in good working order for ‘some day’.
She is wonderful. I’m brimming with “mimi” plans for the future. Already researched how to make her an inside reading tent… getting a little ahead of myself Dusting off the books, toys and doll houses in the attic…
So excited for you. My oldest and his wife are expecting in a few months. They just announced that it’s a girl, so I’ve been busy sewing little dresses. Oh, such fun!
My nephew and his wife just celebrated their 5th wedding anniversary, and have 3 children, turning 4, 2, and few months old. They have a split picture showing them in wedding attire on a swing set, and on the bottom the 3 children on a swing set (baby in baby seat swing). Sis is 1 hour away. Loves being grandma, but it is exhausting when they have them for a day or weekend. She likes doing a few hours ‘relief’.
@Madison…you never know…the best laid plans, etc…I’m getting a new grandson next week and I didn’t think I’d have any for 5 more years or so either! Actually now, as my body has started to feel my age this summer, I’m glad to get one early while I am in pretty good condition.
Here is my public service announcement. Check your health policies to see if your daughters are covered for maternity care (if they are on your policy), they may not be, then let them know if they aren’t! Accidents happen. I told a neighbor about checking her insurance and she said “Oh, SuzieQ won’t get pregnant” and I told her that Petunia hadn’t planned on it either.
My older sister just became a grandmother last week so I’m a great aunt. A really, really great aunt.
My only unsolicited advice is to check 529’s in your state and the state they live in. I’m so glad we prepaid tuition for my children. My oldest will attend college next year at 1997 tuition prices. Our state tuition has gone up 300% since he was born! Grandparents can buy them.
