New American Idol thread

I’ll duck with you MommaJ. Adam is obviously talented - but his singing leaves me cold. He probably belongs in a Broadway show versus a recording career. (And his facial expressions irritate me - never seems genuinely involved with what’s going on - as if he’s above the whole thing.) But what do I know - I liked Anoop.

MommaJ and altmom: Given how Adam finished this week, you are not alone in your opinion. I am no expert. My daughters have been trained classically so they are not much help in judging the vocal talent of these Idols.

Adam entertains. He seems versatile. I agree some of his facial expressions are silly and over the top. At other times his eyes captivate me, and his vocal antics thrill me. It’s all a matter of taste, I guess.

Allison has an amazing voice. If I close my eyes and simply listen, I cannot believe she is only 16/17. I just don’t know if she would be interesting beyond a song or two.

I loved Anoop too. I know opinions vary - thank goodness, but I can’t see how viewing the “If I Can’t Have You” can leave anyone cold or think he’s not connected to the song. I’d swear his heart is either broke or breaking. I loved the Mad World performance, and I think the level of sadness in it is almost disturbing. The interesting thing to me about Adam - and this has grown on me - is that, through the cockiness, he seems very vulnerable and exposed. Maybe he is just a really good actor, but it looks real to me.

Edited to add - Adam has a classically trained voice. His diction is excellent and he sings on the breath. To nitpick, I don’t like the way his tongue protrudes when it hits the high, big notes, but doing strange things with the tongue is part of some singers’ technique. He also gasps a bit too much - I have the same complaint with Idina Menzel.

Thanks so much for that link to Adam’s studio recording of “Feeling Good”, PrimetimeMom.

I just listened to it and was blown away. Gave me goosebumps. I have only downloaded one AI song in 8 years and it was “Mad World”. Think I’ll have to add this one. He’s simply an unbelievable vocalist.

I too will make sure to vote for him this week. Adam Lambert is a remarkable find.

I think Adam is the most talented of the lot and have felt that way since I started watching the season when the finalists were announced (I long ago gave up watching before then). However, I was just a little put off by his reaction to being in the bottom three. I think he would have more appeal to the masses if he stopped reading his own press. He’ll do fine whether he wins or not.
I like all of the final four, so I can be happy no matter what happens from here on out.

I wasn’t watching when it was announced - what was the reaction?

I thought he was more than a bit surprised that he had landed in the bottom 3. He had the “I’m ready for my close up” look on his face and then it fell apart just a little when they sent Alison to safety.

Lol, MommaJ, that’s kind of funny! But since I don’t know any flamboyant gay musical theater boys, I can only judge by what I see & hear from Adam, which for me is Ring of Fire, Mad World & Feeling Good. I don’t think many people could do all three of those so equally well; certainly not any of the other contestants. And I guess I just like outrageously over the top, cause I thought that staircase entrance was the second best thing I’ve ever seen on Idol (the first best being Ring of Fire).

I do understand that he may not be your taste in music, but the talent there is just amazing.
If you haven’t listened to the studio version of Feeling Good, you owe it to yourself to check it out.

is the audio of the studio versions down-loadable? (now there is an awkward construction!) I checked the link and it is a video. I am not skilled enough to know how to download the audio only (and move it to my ipod?)

mafool, there is a website that converts youtube videos to audio for free. I’m not sure if I can post it here?

Yes. I have the full Adam Lambert 8-song (so far) studio album.

You can buy the studio version from all the contestants each week at the iTunes store. 99 cents per song. All of Adam’s starting with *Black and White *are there. There’s usually a link directly from the front page of the iTunes store to take you to this week’s studio singles.

There are also ways to steal them, but I doubt CC wants people posting instructions for downloading illegal MP3s, although there is always Google search.

Pop for the 99 cents. The audio quality of the YouTube stuff isn’t close to that of the actual audio downloads.

interesteddad is right, pop for the 99 cents. I use the free converter for things I can’t buy, like Crawl Thru the Fire. I would gladly pay to download it, but there’s no option for that.

David Cook’s brother Adam died of brain cancer on Saturday. How sad for his family.

oh… that is so sad. I am glad he was able to see his brother’s success before he died.

I read that this morning. It’s very sad for the entire family and particularly for his wife and two very young children.

Ok everyone it is Tuesday so make sure to vote. If you love Adam like our family does then make sure he’s not in the bottom two this week. I am looking forward to seeing what all of the do with the rock genre. I certainly think they can all do well with it if they pick the right song!

I have a meeting tonight and will need to miss our little club. I am going to Tivo AI. Until what time can I vote???

I believe that you can vote up to 4 hours after the show is over.

I think it’s “up to 2 hours.” I don’t know what that means on the West Coast, though.

I’m actually thinking of going to the AI Concert Tour this summer. Has anyone ever gone? I don’t want to be the only older fan in the crowd!

Don’t worry about it 1970 - go and have a great time! I’ve been among the few “old” fans before. I like to think it makes me cool. :)
