New Bedding for Us

I bought a new mattress last winter for our guest room, where I admittedly sleep due to husband’s snoring. I thought I wanted a pillow top until I tried them out and then realized it was too “sinky” for me - I wanted to lay gently on top of the mattress, not within it. I ended up splurging on a Beautyrest Black - I gather there are new models in 2024. It’s a coil based mattress with foam and such layers on top. Admittedly it was not cheap but I’ve been very happy. (I also bought an adjustable base which I love.)

I got the C Class Medium, after numerous back and forth tests at Macy’s.

Revisiting this issue as we are in the process of purchasing a new bed (usually can find some deals around Memorial Day) and unfortunately we had already ordered bedding (we hadn’t planned to buy a new bed when we ordered the bedding!!) Has anyone purchased a bed for lower back issues? Foam/latex vs hybrid vs traditional bedding with pillow top? What do you like? Not like? We are considering a tempur-pedic hybrid pro adapt with an adjustable frame. We need to stick with a mattress no bigger than 12” in depth, which rules out a lot of the large beautyrest and others (besides ot wanting to buy all new sheets, the bed cover won’t fit correctly with a very thick mattress). We also looked at a few other brands (naturepedic is a really cool concept but the legs of the frame aren’t adjustable and I prefer to buy everything at once) and we looked at The Original Mattress Factory.

The bedding we had ordered has a 17” drop on the side, which should just cover the frame but there will be about 9” or so of open space below the frame (a bed skirt is probably ill advised with this type of frame, which lifts the head, the foot and has lumbar support). Has anyone put a bedskirt on this type of frame?

Thanks in advance.

We switched to Saatva Classic (Luxury firm) mattress last year from a Tempur-Pedic Cloud mattress that was 10+years old, because of persistent back pain. The mattress has been good and the back pain has reduced.

We also got the adjustable base plus which meant the mattress couldn’t be thicker than 11.5”. We removed the slats from the bed and the adjustable frame nests (frame height is adjustable) inside so it isn’t seen. We haven’t used a bed skirt for years.

IIRC, the Saatva website has a mattress quiz that is pretty detailed and helpful.

Where are those mattresses sold?

They are sold online…but this might help.

We have a Saatva as well and bought at their showroom store in our city. My DH had back problems, someone recommended to us and it has been much better for him. We’ve had it about a year and a half.

I also recently purchased the Saatva Classic Luxury Firm after a post response on CC - love it! One of the most comfortable beds I’ve slept on. We do not have an adjustable base, but I will swear by the mattress.

Would prefer not to buy a bed online. Then we have to deal with hiring a company to take away what we have. To be honest, Costco has a version of the Tempur-pedic and frame that is half the price of getting it in the mattress stores. It’s tempting, but I really don’t wanna have to deal with finding a third-party to get the mattresses out of the house set up the frame, etc. etc. I’m sure they exist, but I don’t wanna deal with that. I’d rather have it as part of the order.

We placed the order online at Saatva without trying it out in person and have been very happy with it. They make the mattresses to order so it took 5-6 weeks to be delivered. The delivery people were excellent — careful, courteous and considerate of our concerns. They were prepared to remove the slats of the bed when they installed the frame and mattress.
We did not have an old mattress to remove but they do say that they will take care of disposing your old mattress.

Other online companies will remove an old mattress also.

I suspect most if not all online bedding companies include a white glove delivery service including removal of the old mattress. Mattresses are so big, unwieldy, and heavy that they probably wouldn’t get any business if they didn’t.

Anyway back on topic, I bought a Helix Midnight Lux last year for our guest bedroom and really like it. They include something like a free 100 day trial, which I actually used to switch to a different model for a couple weeks, then changed my mind and just kept the original model (the Midnight) before they picked it up.

No fuss at all with the two pickups and great customer service from Helix.

If your town has a “buy nothing” group- you’ll be stunned at how quickly a mattress can disappear!

Many non-profits will not accept donated mattresses- even ones in near-new condition, so sign of bedbugs, etc. But the need is real- ask any social worker in your community.

We listed two mattresses on “buy nothing” and a social worker reached out within minutes, showed up with a helper and the mattresses, box springs, old frames were tied to the top of her car and vanished. I"m now eyeing a few more things (old kitchen table, a bulky couch/love seat combo) which I would love to get rid of but the hassle factor has kept them hanging around. And donating them (dragging them to a distribution site, or waiting around for a truck to show up) is painful also. But someone showing up that evening and making them disappear so that a family who has recently gotten permanent housing has much needed furniture? Sign me up!!!

Thanks. I had forgotten that our decorator has a contact who runs a home for recovering addicts and they have taken a lot of stuff from us (including a pool table). She said she will reach out to him.

A few years ago I was very surprised to be able to give away an old twin mattress on Buy Nothing (or one of the other similar methods). We were able to deliver to the curb but had them cart it to the 3rd floor. Two kiddies were smiling because it meant they would no longer be needing to sleep on the floor. Of course another time I paid $60 for the town to come pick up a twin box spring and mattress.

We have a paid bulk pickup option from the town as well… but it’s nice to know that someone sleeping on an air mattress or a sleeping bag is getting a bed!
